Susan Gain Obituary

SUSAN MARIE (MATTOX) GAIN
September 7, 1948 ˜ July 4, 2022

Susan was born to Allie Mattox and Dorothy (Dollar) Mattox at Vancouver Memorial Hospital. The Mattox family home was on 219th just down the street from Dollar’s Corner, which was named after her maternal grandfather Smith L. Dollar, an early settler. Susan had lived on her beloved Mattox property the majority of her life. Many Dollar, Mattox and Barnes family reunions, graduations, Easters and weddings, including Susan and Jon’s, have been held in the grove behind the main house and at the families Allie Park.
Susan attended Battle Ground High School and graduated in 1967. She worked for Nabisco for 48 years and had worked in every department and on every line. She was one of the longest working employees. As a teenager she worked in the summer at Battle Ground Lake with many family members. Aunt Verna and Uncle Virg had leased the property and put all the cousins to work. Wonderful memories.
Susan was a princess in the Harvest Day Parade. She was a past Honored Queen for Bethel #38 as was her loving sister Dorothy Jean and nieces Jody and Judy.
Susan and her siblings loved Spirit Mountain. Susan always took them for Christmas in October. They all had their own KENO numbers, but Susan was always the luckiest.
Susan loved Playa Del Carmen and made many trips with Marilynn, Becky, and Shelly. Susan loved Disneyland. She and Shelly made many trips and Susan always made sure they were decked out in ears and Disney shirts. She loved Italy and had traveled with her forever friend Julie. She loved her exercise class and her Nabisco friends. Susan loved her nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends so much.
Susan was very generous! She loved dressing us all in matching PJ’s, tops and shoes wherever we would travel. She loved shopping for LV and jewelry with Lisa.
She had love for animals especially Lenny and Ilean. Susan has supported many dog rescues, locally and in Playa Del Carmen. She also supported LLS. She loved buying gifts for people.
Susan met Jon back in our teen roller-skating days. Jon was the floor manager, and everyone wanted to skate with Jon. She skated every Friday and Saturday night with nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jon and Susan reconnected their friendship at a later date. They were married at Allie Park on August 25, 1984. They have had a very comfortable life where she grew up.
Susan was the type of wife, daughter, sibling, aunt, cousin, and friend everyone needs. She was generous, kind, caring, and had a great sense of humor which is throughout our family. She was extremely close to her mother. Jon said it best, “Susan was an incredible lady. The love and friendship she felt for people was amazing and returned many times over”.
Susan is survived by her husband, Jon; goddaughter, Carissa Ramsay; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Allie and Dorothy; brothers “Babe”, Leonard, Michael; and sister, Dorothy Jean Barnes.
A special thank you to caregivers: nieces Marilynn Mattox DeLapp and Judy Barnes Daniels, longtime friend Jodie Sharp, goddaughter Carissa Ramsay, and to all the outstanding doctors and staff at Legacy Salmon Creek, Vancouver Clinic, and OHSU Knight Cancer Center.
Susan’s wishes for her celebration at Allie Park for her sister and herself, it is being planned for a later date. Susan will rest in peace at Manor Wilson Bridge Cemetery with the Mattox, Dollar family.
Donations in Susan’s name many be sent to the Vancouver Humane Society.

Susan was married to my cousin Jon. Our family in California will always remember Susan for the boxes of Nabisco Cookies ( especially the Oreos) she would send home with us to California when we came to visit.

Always a caring person. She will be missed.
