Charles Haney Obituary

"Jack was a devoted family man and role model
and will be greatly missed by all that loved him. He was a kind, hard working, independent thinking, and a very fit man. "
Charles O. "Jack" Haney, 84, of Portland, OR, passed away Nov. 5, 2010 surrounded by his family, of complications from leukemia. He was born Sept. 4, 1926 to Charles B. and Berniece L. Haney and later graduated from Fort Vancouver High School.
Jack joined the U.S. Merchant Marines during WW II, serving in the South Pacific.
After the war, he worked as a deck hand on tugboats working the Columbia and Willamette rivers. Jack earned his pilot license and became a Portland Police Officer with the harbor patrol, and retired as a Portland Firefighter as a pilot on the Willamette River aboard the Carl Prinn.
Jack married his high school sweetheart, Lucile, and they celebrated 65 wonderful years together while raising four daughters: Joy Benz of Tualatin, OR, Susan Monlux of Portland, OR, Kay Mabry of Beaverton, OR and Michele Weitman of Washougal, WA. They have seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a dog named; Willy.
A "Celebration of Life" will be held at a later date.
Donations for AML research can be made to the Oregon/SW Washington chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

To all the Haney Family,
My deepest sympathies go out to all of you. I'm not sure if you remember me,Patty Robertson, from the old Arnada neighborhood. We definitely had some good times, even after you moved to Couch Street. Dad, Mom and Wes have all passed so I feel your pain. Linda and I were reminiscing over Thanksgiving good times at your Grandma's house over by Harney and sledding down Mill Plain hill in the snow. I have often thought of you and wondered where your folks were these days. I am in Vancouver, Linda trucking out of Phoenix. I know the angels are holding your dad in their arms and hovering close to see you through you time of sadness. Love & Prayers to all of you.

I did not know Charles "Jack" Haney but wish to express my condolences to the family. I apologize for the nature of this note, but I am wondering where the family lived in the 1950s and if his daughter, Joy, attended the former Arnada Grade school at 26th and H streets in Vancouver in the 1950s, and if her grandfather --presumably Charles "Jack" Haney's father -- operated a sort of hobby shop at 28th and Main Streets during those same years. I attended Arnada and there was a Joy Haney in the "class of 1957" with me.
