Joan Renner Obituary

JOAN MARY RENNER

Joan Mary Renner originally from Crookston, MN, passed away on Jan. 3, 2023. She was a lover of animals, pottery, birthdays (especially hers), and all things Christmas. She was extremely committed to family and friends. She loved to laugh and to make everyone else laugh along with her. Joan loved life.
Joan was a connector of people. A believer in the human spirit with a fierce commitment to finding the good in almost everyone she met. Joan was effortless in her ability to inspire people to contribute to their community. Joan didn’t take her work home with her, she took her home to work. She embraced life as though everyone she met was family. The legacy of Joan’s work is instrumental to this day and will carry on for generations. Joan was hilarious with an infectious sense of humor. This is how she navigated her personal life and the complex issues of her profession while always keeping the comfort of others top of mind.
Joan was a visionary who worked tirelessly for over 30 years to build a future for survivors of sexual violence that included respect, dignity, and accessible whole health services. In 1980 Joan was instrumental in creating the first sexual assault program for the YWCA of Clark County. Joan was courageous and did not shy away from the impossible. As Director of the Sexual Assault Program Joan established 24-hour crisis interventions and advocacy for sexual assault victims and survivors. Her efforts further promoted the development of support groups, legal and medical advocacy, crisis intervention and community education.
Joan was a pioneer. She recognized the value of unity and inclusion in the healing of community trauma. Joan was a catalyst of change. In addition to being recognized with countless awards, honorariums, and certificates she also provided thousands of hours of trainings and served on countless boards.
Joan was preceded in death by her sister Mickey, brother Bob and her parents Josephine and Robert.
Joan is survived by her husband, Bill; daughter, Shannon (Eric); and sisters, Alice, Carolyn, Leatrice, Becky and Michelle; amazing nieces and nephews and a beautiful family of friends.

I believe we are put on this earth to help other people and to make the world a better place. Joan was a shining example through her commitment to crime victims and her amazing sense of humor. She was able to bring joy while doing such difficult and important work. She definitely made the world a better place.

There are no words grand enough to capture and celebrate Joan´s life, nor to express this loss. We laughed our way through the best of times and the worst of times.
