Dorothy Herbert Obituary

DOROTHY NORTHCUTT HERBERT
April 17, 1921 ~ June 25, 2009

Dorothy Northcutt Herbert passed away June 25, 2009 in Vancouver, Washington. She was born Dorothy Lisette Amelia Flowers in Atlanta, Georgia on April 17, 1921 to Robert and Dorothy Flowers. She had one brother, Robert who is deceased.
Dorothy grew up in Atlanta before moving to Washington D.C. during WW II where she was an accountant with the Department of the Navy. It was there that she met her future husband, Ray Northcutt, a Navy Lieutenant from Vancouver, Washington, stationed in D.C.
In the late 1940's Dorothy headed west to the Portland area and worked as an accountant for a local lumber company. In December 1952 she and Ray married and Dorothy moved to the Northcutt family homestead on Salmon Creek in Vancouver, where she joined and became active in Salmon Creek United Methodist Church.
She continued her education at Clark college and received her associates degree. Her studies in religion continued and she accepted a call to become a Methodist Pastor. Upon completion of her studies in Stockton, California she was appointed Pastor at Fern Prairie United Methodist Church where she served for the next ten years. After retiring from Fern Prairie she and Ray traveled extensively for the next ten years throughout the world until Ray's death in 1990.
Dorothy was a member of the Pacific Northwest Conference United Methodist Educational Foundation and served as Finance Chair-person for the Vancouver District for many years. She remained very involved and active in church affairs. Her favorite ministry was the training of young people to be acolytes, a program she established and directed for 25 years at Salmon Creek United Methodist Church. Dorothy was also very well known and sought after for the beautiful wedding ceremonies she performed through out the Northwest and even as far away as Japan.
In 2000 Dorothy married Rev. Hugh Herbert of Missoula, Montana and they were blessed to have the past nine years together.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Hugh; five stepchildren, Susan Goss, Peggy, David, and Robert Herbert, and George Northcutt; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service and reception will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Salmon Creek United Methodist Church, 12217 NE Highway 99 in Vancouver.

Dorothy was an inspiration to all the children who adored her at Salmon Creek Methodist Church. She was a wise, witty, beautiful, generous mentor to so many in our small country community. As a child with Dorothy you might learn about pierced earrings, eating your soup correctly or how ice cubes melting in a glass could be a metaphor for the trinity. As an adult her love, caring and zest for life balanced with her passion for looking deeply into ideas made her a magnificent friend and dinner partner. Pondering and discussing spiritual and philosophical ideas with her before or after the symphony is a memory I will treasure forever; as well as the delight my young daughters took in admiring her sophisticated style when she arrived at our home on those special nights out.

Sending sincere condolences to her family. Please know she was well loved by many.

Dorothy Northcutt was the most beautiful lady I had ever seen when I was 8 years old. She was my Cub Scout Den Mother and I would secretly put flowers in her mail box. We later sang together in the Salmon Creek Methodist Church choir with her husband Ray (who seemed to like me even though I was madly in love with this wife!). What wonderful people and what wonderful memories. I shall miss this grand lady so very much.

All of us at the Country Cafe Restaurant that had the pleasure of serving Hugh and Dorothy the past years we will miss her. She always had a beautiful smile and laugh and kind words for all and even a cute joke to tell. She is a wonderful woman and I feel honored to have had her as a friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Hugh and the family and we know God has a special place for Dorothy. Carrie, Brenda and the Crew of the County Cafe

It would be impossible to remember Dorothy without mentioning her wonderful zest for life! She had a laugh and a smile that could light up a room. The children of Salmon Creek Methodist Church all grew up a little more confident because Dorothy took the time to let us all know how very important we were to her. Dorothy personified the word JOYFUL.

She was a lovely lady. May she rest in peace, although I don't think she will want to rest once she gets to heaven. My condolences to the family.

Sincere Sympathy to the family and friends of Dorothy Northcutt Herbert in your loss. My sister and I have many cherished memories of good times at Fern Prairie Methodist Church when Mrs. Northcutt was Pastor. She taught us many things by words and example. May you find comfort in the good times and memories you had with Dorothy.
