Doris Manley Obituary

DORIS ADELIA MANLEY
June 28, 1925 ˜ April 16, 2021

Lifelong adventurer, learner and explorer, Doris Manley left this world April 16, 2021, passing peacefully in her home surrounded by family.
She was born Doris Adelia Pummell June 28, 1925, to Clarence Ezekiel Allen Pummell and Esther Emily (Johnston) Pummell, in Montezuma, OH. Doris, along with her four siblings, was raised with rural Midwest tenacity helping run the family’s 120 acre farm near Morenci, MI.
With WWII drawing to a close, Doris left farm and family to find work in the offices of Burroughs Mfg. in Detroit. Her typing and shorthand skills were legendary. She made lifelong friends, married and started a family with Charles Francis “Frank” Manley. Her marriage having ended, in 1967 she relocated to Plymouth, MI, built a successful career in real estate and raised her six children.
In 1974 her adventurer’s spirit led her to the Columbia River valley and a new home in Vancouver, WA. There she shared with her three youngest children her passion for hiking trails in the Gorge and surrounding mountains, strolling ocean beaches and exploring the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
She worked supporting operations of the Portland Association of Teachers, retiring in 1990. In retirement Doris traveled the world visiting almost every continent. She had a strong thirst for knowledge and understanding of the world. Her explorer’s heart took her to Machu Picchu in Peru, to China, to Ireland and along the inside passage to Alaska as well as all over the continental US. She was especially interested in Archeology, volunteering at Fort Vancouver where she participated in archaeological digs and cataloged artifacts.
Always open to new experiences and different cultures, she encouraged her children to explore, experience and enjoy the world. As a mother and as a friend, Doris was kind and inclusive. Home was a place where her kids and their friends could hang out in safety and comfort. She was a wise and sympathetic listener. A quote that summarizes her wisdom; “this too shall pass.”
A grandmother and great grandmother, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold Pummell and John Pummell; her sister, Phyllis Thornton; and her daughter Linda Cawley. She is survived by her brother, Clarence Pummell; children, Sharon Manley, Kathleen Manley, Mary Casey, Roch Manley and Michele Hanlon; and by her 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Friends of the Columbia Gorge, Friends of Fort Vancouver, or The Nature Conservancy. A memorial gathering will be held in summer of 2021.

I think of my dear friend, Doris, frequently & our China trip together & the friendship that developed from that. I'm grateful for the blessing of her being part of my life. Hope all is well with the Manley family.

I am Lillian Koopman’s daughter she and Doris traveled to China together as well as many other hikes. They both had a great hunger for adventure and a love of the outdoors. My mother loved Doris and spoke of her often. She attended my moms surprise “90th” birthday party in 2016 where I first met her. She was so thoughtful and caring when my mom passed away 3 years ago I know she will be dearly missed by her family. Love and condolences to you.

Doris was a dear friend of my mom's (Lillian Koopman). I'm not sure where all they traveled together but know they climbed many nountains and walked many trails in the Pacific Northwest and where on the same China trip. They had a close lunch group celebrating each others Birthdays. Doris was so caring at the time of my mom's passing almost three years ago. I had the pleasure of meeting her and could see what a nice lady she was. My mom loved her so very much. I know she will be missed so much by her family and friends. So sad to see of her passing.

Doris was one of my most favorite dental patients and people. I have so many memories of seeing her for 38 years. Mary, Roch, and Michele will always have special places in my heart. I will miss Doris's smile and calm manner so much. She was a special human being and I send wishes for all the family to cherish the wonderful memories. With loving memories, Duke Simpson

Doris was a very cherished friend of mine. We met by chance on a trip to China when her scheduled roommate backed out & I became the last minute replacement. Many years of traveling, hiking the gorge with mutual friends & just plain getting together were enjoyed ever since. I feel privileged to have had her part of my like. Doris was a very caring & loving person. She has my admiration for what she faced & accomplished in her life.
