Raymond Olds Obituary

RAYMOND EDWIN OLDS
Sept. 29, 1919 ~ May 31, 2009

Raymond Edwin Olds passed away on May 31, 2009, at the age of 89. He was born in New Effington, SD to Eva and Bert Olds on September 29, 1919, the youngest of nine children.

He married his love and partner in life, Mary Louise Koehler on September 3, 1950. With their two young daughters, they moved to Clark County in 1957.

Ray was an active member of the Vancouver Heights United Methodist Church. He was a millwright at Crown Zellerbach until 1983. Upon retirement, he had plenty of time to spend on fishing, traveling, bowling, gardening, and entertaining many friends and family at his vacation property in Long Beach, WA.

He will be remembered as a loving and caring son, brother, husband, uncle, father, and grandfather. It was Ray's family and friends that were the greatest joys in his life.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his four sisters, Eva, Anne, Alice, and Beulah; and his four brothers, Andrew, Bert, John, and Dennis.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; daughter, Rosalie Olds; daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and David Hanawalt; daughter-of-the-heart, Judy Oakes; grandchildren, Angela and Scott McCullough and Bill and Kathy Hanawalt; and great-granddaughter, Nora Jean.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at Vancouver Heights United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 13, 2009. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Vancouver Heights United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or charity of your choice.

Mary Lou and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I remember Mr. Olds and playing at your house with Angela. Grandma and I used to walk over to your house when I was little. Grandma and Grandpa have a new card player in heaven. Blessings, Elisabeth Sykes-Sofianos

Hi Diane, Mary Lou, Rosalie and family,
I'm always at a loss for words when writingabout someone who has passed. I know it's hard for you to believe, Diane, that I'd be at a loss for words, ., but here goes. I remember Ray Olds as far back as 1959. He and family lived in Camas and were looking for a house in Vancouver. Then I was happy to learn that the Olds were moving to V Street, and I lived on Z Street. Rosalie and I went to the same school, and Diane and I became good friends. Our families got together often, our parents loved to play cards. Our moms would play against our dads and most of the time my mom and Mary Lou would win. Poor Ray had to partner with my dad. We had a lot of fun growing up, though. I really enjoyed those times and when I think about them, I just have to smile.
