Edgar Perry "Ed" York

Edgar York Obituary

EDGAR "ED" PERRY YORK Edgar Perry York, of Vancouver, WA, passed away Monday, March 13, 2006 at the Ray Hickey Hospice House after a long illness at the age of 79. He was born in Rupert, Idaho to Enola (Peggy) Nutting and Edgar York, Sr. He served in both the Army and the Navy during WWII. Upon his discharge, Ed married Velma Harvill where they resided in both Fresno and Bakersfield, CA. They had four children and divorced in 1968. Ed married Wanda Borch in 1969. She brought three children to the marriage. Ed was an innovative businessman. His early work included sales of insurance and real estate. He was General Manager of three NASCAR Speedways in California, including Selma, Bakersfield and Kearney Bowl in Fresno. He also served as General Manager of the Bakersfield Civic Auditorium promoting entertainment, sports and music events. In 1969, Ed married Wanda and moved to a new city where they bought a new house and entered a new industry which neither knew anything about, all in a weeks time. They were fast learners and ultimately Ed, in addition to running his own business, developed a much needed school for those engaged in carpet related skills. He also founded a trade association (Society of Cleaning Technicians), a disaster restoration franchise (Disaster Kleenup) and an international certifying organization (International Institute of Carpet and Upholstery Cleaners). All of these organizations are thriving today. In recognition of his far-reaching accomplishments, he was named "Person of the Twentieth Century" by the leading industry journal, Cleanfax. Ed truly changed an industry. After retirement, Ed worked tirelessly to improve conditions for the handicapped by compelling local government to comply with ADA requirements. He most recently participated in the Burnt Bridge Creek restoration efforts to restore our environmental quality. Ed was preceded in death by his infant sister Barbara; his eldest son Alan; granddaughter CynDee; and grandson Jay. He is survived by his wife Wanda; brother Richard Page of Santa Maria, CA; children, Sandra Avery of Santa Maria, CA, Micheal York of Goleta, CA, Charlotte Kobold of Billings, MT, Cheritta Herzbrun of Danville, CA, Robert Borch of Port Townsend, WA and Carol Mittie of Longview, WA; as well as grandchildren, Bill, Laurie, Matt, Caitlin, Jess, Melissa, Sarah, Meghan, Morgan and Madeline. Surviving great-grandchildren are Sierra, Ethan, Taylor, Jack, Harry, Carson, Tyler, Anthony and Keera. A celebration of Ed's life will be held at 2:00 pm on April 8, 2006 at the Michael Servetus Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. The family would like to thank the loving care and support provided by Hospice Southwest. Donations may be made in Ed's name to Hospice Southwest.

I am so sorry to hear of Ed's passing. What a generous man, always willing to share ideas and spend time talking with you. His contributions to the cleaning industry has been huge. And the industry has grown in professionalism because of Ed. My prayers and sympathy is with the family. And a thank you for sharing Ed with all of us.

I am very sorry to hear of Ed's passing. Ed was a person that I will always remember. For the help and advice he provided, and for all the times I found myself in defense of him. He had a way to get you to think, and you had better be ready for the wit and wisdom to follow. I never really knew if he was joking with me or if he was trying to rip me to pieces. I always learned something new with each conversation or confrontation. I was thrilled when I saw that Ed was honored in Clean Fax. He was a true one of a kind. I have no doubt that our industry will have an award in his honor, and the sooner the better. My best to you Wanda and your extended family.

Ed was like a father to me. I truly considered Ed to be my best friend. He was always there for me personally and professionally. I doubt if anything will fill the hole I feel in my heart with the passing of Ed. I will truly miss my best friend. May God grant peace to Wanda and the entire family.

To Mr. York's Family,

I am sorry for the loss you are feeling at the passing on of Ed. May the Lord provide you a peace that passes all understanding in the days to come.

The certification of over 100,000 individuals in the past 34 years likely would not have occurred if it were not for Ed & his passion for this industry.

Sincerely,

Ed Hobbs

Dear Wanda & Family,

I was so saddened to hear of Ed's passing. I first met Ed in 1978, I was 7 months pregnant and we compared belly sizes. That was the beginning of a long friendship. You all were there for me through lots of tough times, for that I will always be greatful.

He was truly a force to be dealt with and he will be missed. Please know there are many that are greiving along with you in your loss.

God bless,

Rochelle

Norm and I met Ed in the 70s in Cleveland, OH. We went up for a seminar he was presenting and came home with advice that's as applicable today as it was then: if you want more business, raise your prices. We were newbies and Ed was his impatient, blunt, loquacious self. On the way home in Columbus, we decided he knew what he was talking about. In Cincinnati, we decided to not double but maybe raise our prices 25%. Six months later we purchased our first truck mount and today we still refer to the SCT bulletins Ed and Wanda published in the 70s and 80s. I think about Ed's death and the tears well up and the gut tightens. He wasn't a teddy bear kind of person. I attributed to Ed a kind of Godzilla (bigger than life)-Abe Lincoln (honest as the day is long)-Venus Fly Trap (eat your alive)personna which commanded your attention, engaged your thinking and challenged you to action. There aren't many people in this world who ever made such an impression on me. I'd love to hear Ed's conversation with St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. Right this minute, Ed is sharing his ideas to double the population in Heaven. He might even convince Almighty God to conserve energy and lower the temp in Hell. Ed had a way of ruffling feathers, patting heads and kicking butt. I really miss him. He was one of my heroes. My deepest sympathy to his family.

May the Lord Bless and keep Ed's entire family by His Holy Spirit and the Hope of Jesus Christ.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Ed face to face, but i did speak with him many times over the phone. I hope there is someone to fill his shoes in the cleaning industry. He can never be replaced.

Condolences,

My sincerest condolences to Wanda and family. I worked for Ed & Wanda when they lived out on the mountain. Those last minute book writings and printings for their schools (as in flying out early the next morning) kept me on my toes. He was a great visionary and I enjoyed working with him.

Ed York made an immediate impression on Stan and I when we were about to move into the neighborhood. He saw me taking pictures of our new home before we moved in. He came right up and wanted to know what I was doing and then after I explained we had bought the house 2 doors down he asked, "Do you have kids and dogs?" I said as a matter of fact We have both. "oh no, I don't like kids or dogs," he told me. I thought oh no, we've moved into a neighborhood with W.C. Fields. I was alittle concerned but I was to learn that he did have a wonderful sense of humor and he did indeed like children and I think some dogs were ok, too. Our youngest son Jesse was a many time visitor to Ed and Wanda's house for cookies that were kept by the kitchen door for those summer time visits of Jesse and the kids around the neighborhood. We will all miss Ed for his warm smile and funny stories, and quirky sense of humor. We were glad to know you Ed. Our warmest feelings of condolences for Wanda and family. Your neighbors Brenda and Stan.

I appreciated all the business tips from Ed over the years and the fact he was always challenging the way we did, and there was always a better way. One of the highlights of my career was the Cleaning College in Vancover in '94 or '95. I'll miss him.
