Carol Farthing Obituary

CAROL JEAN FARTHING
March 24, 1947 ˜ September 29, 2023

Carol Jean Farthing passed away peacefully Sept. 29, 2023, with family by her side at the age of 76. Carol was born March 24, 1947, in Afton, WY, the second of four children born to Roscoe Theodore Barrus and Correne Papworth Barrus.
The family moved to Portland, OR, when Carol was very young, and it was there that she spent much of her youth. In 1961, the family moved to Lake Fenton, MI, where Carol attended high school and graduated from Lake Fenton High in 1965.
Following graduation, Carol attended BYU in Provo, UT. While attending BYU, the family moved back to the beautiful Northwest to Vancouver, WA. In 1972, on a summer break from college, Carol met and began dating her eternal companion, Michael D. Farthing. They continued their courtship after returning to BYU and were married Nov. 22, 1972, in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Following their marriage, they lived in Orem, UT, until Mike completed his BA. Later they moved to Phoenix, AZ, and then moved back to Vancouver for Michael’s work opportunities and to be closer to family.
Carol was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served faithfully in many capacities and supported her husband in his callings. She had a firm testimony of the Savior, Jesus Christ, and shared it often. It touched the hearts of many.
Carol was an accomplished violinist and for many years enjoyed playing with the Northwest Symphonic Pops Orchestra. She loved good music throughout her life.
Carol was a kind, fun and loving soul with a gentle, caring spirit. She loved finding the beauty in life, being with children, family, good music, books and movies. She enjoyed sharing thoughts and counsel with friends and family and was always attentive to their lives and needs.
She was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed by those who remain, and lovingly welcomed by those who have preceded her in passing.
Carol is survived by her sister, Evelyn R. Hawkes; and her brothers, Bradley R. Barrus and Dean M. Barrus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael D. Farthing; and parents, Roscoe T. and Correne P. Barrus.
We will celebrate her beautiful life in a private service and then she will be interred at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Portland, OR.

Sister Farthing,

It's been a year since your passing. Although I am so glad for all the joy that you and Bishop Farthing are experiencing up in heaven, I will always miss having you here here on earth.

I have always cherished the time I was able to spend learning from you and all bits of wisdom you so often shared with me. They were not only profoundly helpful back then, but have been a strength to me every time that I re-read them in my journal (over the past two decades).

Thank you for believing in me and the thousands of others like me that you loved and served while on earth. Your legacy continues to live on in our minds, hearts, and lives.

Love,

Barbara

Sister Farthing was an unforgettable light who made feel you were a little closer to heaven every time you were in her presence.

Although she faced heavy trials and endured chronic, painful, and debilitating health problems her entire life, she was a woman of bright, strong and abiding faith who lived her life to honor God. Instead of letting her burdens consume her (burdens that most people never knew she had), Carol dedicated her time, talents, and the energy she did have to helping others see themselves and their situations through God's perspective.

The heaven-inspired wisdom and love that she so kindly and abundantly offered to others helped lighten even the heaviest of burdens, because she was connecting people with the Love of the Lord and His Matchless Power of Healing & Deliverance.

Thank you, Sister Farthing! We are all better people because we knew and were abundantly blessed by you. Your light and wisdom is sorely missed, but you left a legacy that I constantly try to emulate.
