I was greatly saddened this week, when I returned to work and learned of Bruce's passing. It was an honor to care for him the last couple of years. He reminded me so much of my own Father. I always scheduled extra time for his clinic visits so we would have time to chat. I enjoyed listening to him talk. He was so knowledgeable in so many disciplines. We would discuss everything from politics to religion to cooking. He had such a wonderful sense of humor. One of his favorite topics was his family. He loved his family with his whole heart. He was so proud of his son Steve, and happy about his new daughter-in-law Tiffany, and of course his own bride, Joanne. I will truly miss you my friend, and Bruce, you were never OFUD. The cat is OFUD.

I first came into contact with "Uncle Bruce" at my Aunt Maureen's (Auntie Reen's) funeral about 8 or 9 years ago. He was so willing to share his faith and encouragement. His work on the family tree was pretty amazing, I wish I could have known Bruce better over my entire life rather than just the last few years. Reading over the entries in this journal I can see how much he was loved. Because he was a believer we can celebrate in knowing we will see him again.

To my sweet Father-In-Law,
You have left your mark on my life. Until the very end, you found joy in our Lord in spite of your circumstances. You loved the book of James and its call to look beyond the trial to the mighty work of God that would be completed through it. You lived well. You made hard choices and now we can speak of a life uncompromised. Thank you. You blessed us with your contagious laugh and great sense of humor. A few of the many things I’ll always remember…how you loved the theatre, the Gaither’s, and basketball. How you anticipated Steve’s arrival to hear about his day. How you warned us about the foxes. How you could talk about a good meal for days :). How you loved reminding everyone that you were “OFUD.” How you lived for your wife. Man, did you ever love your “Honey.” Fifty years with her made you so proud. You poured your wisdom into your son which I will forever reap the benefit of. I am so grateful. What life we have left on this earth will not be the same without you but because of 1 Cor. 15:54-55, we rejoice in your wholeness. Until we meet again our precious and faithful dad, husband, brother, uncle, and friend…we love you…we miss you…we praise God for your life.
Looking forward to picking up where we left off,
Tiffany (SHMWLY)

To the Hume Family,
I had the opportunity to work with Bruce for many years while we were both with the Washington State Patrol. I was very sad when I learned of his passing. He was a true gentleman and a fine example to all of us that he helped throughout his career.

Bruce- You are like another father to me. Although we didn't see much of one another, I always kept you, Joanne, Brian & Steve close to my heart. Without you and your family, MY family would not be here today. I remember asking Joanne how my name came to be Susan Diane and Joanne said that was the name the both of you had chosen IF you had a girl but you were blessed with 2 great boys. My parents let you and Joanne choose my name because they were so grateful for everything you had done for us. I will never forget you Bruce or your family. I will always hold you and your family close to my heart. You will be missed dearly.....

Love,

Susan Diane Miller

Bruce had a huge impact on me and my family. He was instrumental in strengenthing my walk with Jesus. As a young trooper and christian I once asked him if I could be a trooper and a christian if I were faced with having to take a person's life. His answer would help me decide if I could remain a trooper or not. He told me to read Romans:13 in the living bible and let God answer that question. I did. And went on to have a 25 year career full of "divine interventions". Bruce was my friend, mentor and counseller. I look forward to seeing him in heaven.

Bruce was a kind hearted man with a great sense of humor. I met him through work and came to respect a man of values for truth and leadership. He was always willing to lend a hand, and was great as a sounding board for a newcomer with so much to learn. He shared his life stories with such gusto, and his love of his wife and family were so obvious. He always joked when I came to work with a Starbucks drink that I was contributing to his retirement fund. I missed him when he retired and I miss him again now. Please know that a special man now waits for his family in the bosom of his Savior until you meet again.
