VIRGINIA HILLER ABERNATHY
July 13, 1922 ˜ February 19, 2022
Virginia Hiller Abernathy passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on Feb. 19, 2022, in Vancouver, WA.
Virginia was born to Delia and Gus Hiller in Corvallis, OR, on July 13, 1922. After a brief time in Corvallis the family moved to Vancouver, WA, where Virginia would spend much of her life, aside from two years in Los Angeles, CA, where she attended Belmont High School. Ultimately Virginia graduated from Vancouver High School in 1940 after the family relocated to the Northwest.
Virginia received her Associate Degree from Clark College and would go on to work at the Vancouver VA Hospital for 35 years. After retiring from the VA in 1984, Virginia worked for a private barge company until 1994.
Virginia met Harlan O. Abernathy at the age of 19 at the Vancouver Barracks. They were married in 1943 and briefly lived in North Carolina, Florida, then Germany until relocating back to Vancouver. Virginia and Harlan were married for 58 years until his passing in 2001.
Virginia was well known for her love of cooking, baking, and particularly as a beautiful seamstress. She could often be found at local fabric stores shopping for the perfect material for her latest creation. Virginia was especially fond of her home surrounded by gorgeous rose bushes, located in the Southcliff neighborhood in Vancouver, where she resided for 60 years.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Laurie Hudson (Jim); grandchildren, C.J. Hudson (Latasha), Kelsey Hudson (Alex Anderson), and Katie Fessel (Jesse); and four great-grandchildren.
An open house memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 12, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the Hospitality Room at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks to please send donations to PeaceHealth Hospice.
