Lyle Cornwall Obituary

LYLE ENOS"MIKE" CORNWALL
Sept 30, 1925~July 11, 2010

Born on September 30, 1925 in Muscoda, Wisconsin, Mike was a farm boy who enlisted in the Marine Corps in November, 1942. As a member of the 5th Marine Division, he was part of the third wave onto the Island of Iwo Jima where he served 33 days, the whole length of the battle. He was proud to be a Marine and witness the raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi. In January 1946, Mike was discharged and a year later met Wilma, his wife-to-be and the love of his life. They were married on June 5, 1948 and had five children - Sharon, Christine, Bradley, Sheldon, and Jeff. Mike worked in the lumber mills of the Columbia River Valley most of his working life and was considered one of the best lumber graders on the River. He loved gardening, especially raising tomatoes, and always had the best lawn in the neighborhood. After retirement, Mike and Wilma enjoyed traveling- they took their motor home across the United States, spent time in Europe, Japan and Hawaii and went on several cruises. For his 80th birthday, he and Wilma traveled to Washington, DC to see the World War II Memorial and the Marine Corps War Memorial (showing the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima). Mike lived in Stevenson and North Bonneville, Washington for 44 years before moving to Vancouver in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Wilma; daughter Sharon Royce, her husband Al; daughter Christine Voss, her husband Mike; son Bradley Cornwall and his wife, Brenda; 10 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Mike was preceded in death by his sons, Jeff and Sheldon; and his parents, Enos and Illma Cornwall. Mike was a member of LifePoint Church and the Marine Corps League. Mike and Wilma were married 62 years in June, and Mike would have been 85 years young in September. He loved the Lord, his family, his country, and the Marine Corps. Mike joined his Lord and Savior on July 11, 2010. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 15, 2010 at LifePoint Church, Vancouver, Washington - corner of SE 1st Street and 192nd Avenue.

It is sad to hear of Mike's passing.

My condolences to the family. And may your happiest of memories you shared together bring you all some comfort at this very difficult time. And rely on the strenght only God can give, thru prayer, to help you cope with your loss. Phil 4:13
