Betty Terry Obituary

BETTY ANN TERRY

On June 22, 2022, Betty Ann Terry peacefully passed away in her sleep. She was 97 years old. As a lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, Betty had many friends from near and far. She was the mother of four children and grandmother to several more. She was so proud of her large family. She also loved her Catholic Church family; her faith was the cornerstone in her life. Betty worked for 32 years in the University of Portland bookstore before she retired in 1994, much to the chagrin of her numerous campus friends. Betty had been blessed to travel extensively, and to see the migration of her beloved polar bears numerous times in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Betsy Lindstrom. Betty is survived by three sons, 13 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
The service will be this Thursday, June 30, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Proto-Cathedral on 218 West 12th St. in Vancouver, WA.

Aunt Betty was proud of her pioneer family. Her maternal grandfather Clement Vermeire left Belgium in 1898 and came to Oregon. He returned to Belgium and brought his family back to eastern Oregon about 1904.
In 1906 his wife Josephine Vermeire died in a typhoid epidemic. The children Rene, Henry, Margarita, and Aunt Betty's mother Mary were all born in Belgium. After the death of their mother the children went to live at St Joseph's home in Vancouver for several years. Father Verwilghen, a boyhood friend of Clement's,helped care for the children while at St. Joseph's. A difficult beginning for a pioneer Oregon family.

Aunt Betty had more spunk per pound than anyone I know. Go to Manitoba and hang out with polar bears? Of course! Go parasailing for the first time at 85? Why not! "Use it or lose it!" she would say.
She was a force to be reckoned with and an inspiration.

Aunt Betty was a legend - more spice per pound than anyone I know. Dedicated to family and to the spirit of adventure, she lived every day of her life. "Use it or lose it!" she said. Go to Manitoba to watch polar bears come through town? Yes of course. Go parasailing at 85? Why not!

You inspired us, Aunt Betty, and we move on holding your memory close.
