ALYCE MAE (VEHRS) LUTZ
February 20, 1933 ˜ August 30, 2022
- In Loving Memory -
Alyce Mae Lutz, 89, passed away Aug. 30, 2022, in her home state of Washington. She was born in the community of Highland in Clark County to Aaron and Tekla Vehrs. She had a wonderful childhood even though she told her children that when she was born her parents only had a 3-cent stamp to their name during the Great Depression.
She graduated from Fort Vancouver High School in 1950. She was adventurous in climbing Mount Hood and passed that trait to her children. In her freshman year at Clark College she won the Miss Esquire Contest. She also won first place two consecutive years for Floral Arrangement at the Portland Rose Parade. She loved to play the piano and was extremely talented at every aspect of art; painting, quilting, sewing, interior design, and on and on.
She was happily married to Don Lutz for 49 years. They built a beautiful home together in Felida, WA, where the holidays and family gatherings were always something to look forward to. Together they ran the VIP, a successful barbershop and beauty salon in Hazel Dell. When they retired, they enjoyed traveling together and became snow birds, living in Surprise, AZ, during the winter months and Ocean Park, WA, during the summer months. They befriended many people and welcomed them into the family, many of them without family of their own. They valued the many friendships they made along the way. Alyce and Don were blessed with many wonderful years spent together.
As a mother, Alyce would give her children every opportunity to learn by enrolling them in dance, piano, gymnastics, equestrian, tennis, scouts, hockey and almost all of the scholastic sports. Summertime was a chance to take her children to national parks, historic places, visit relatives and grow fruits and vegetable. She taught her children how to be entrepreneurs by selling fruits and vegetables to roadside customers and local stores. She taught her children that all people are created equal. She is remembered as a wonderful grandmother as well, always finding time to teach her grandchildren the fun skills of crafting and baking.
Her love for animals was truly amazing. She raised dogs, cats, sheep, goats, chicken, cattle, horses, geese, pigs, a young squirrel that adopted her and a crow that she splinted it’s broken wing. One of her sheep accidentally scalped itself and she sewed it back together with dental floss, and thanks to her great care it fully recovered from the ordeal.
Her faith in Christ was evident in her life and she was baptized at the Ocean Park Community Church and a member of the Community Church of Sun Village for many years.
Alyce was known for her love, dedication, drive, creativity and compassion for all living things. She will be dearly missed.
Alyce was predeceased by her parents, Aaron and Tekla Vehrs; sister, Phyllis Jungroth; daughter, Deborah Carmichael; and grandson, Nathan Gilbo. She is survived by her husband, Don Lutz; sons, Richard (Debra) Stanley, Robert (Lauri) Stanley, and Sam (Sandy) Stanley; stepdaughters, Deborah (James) Thompson, Vickie (Leo) Oates, and Jan Fortis; stepson, Tony (Nogaphat) Lutz; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial held on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ocean Park Community Church, 26709 Vernon Avenue, Ocean Park, WA 98640.
