June 24, 1927 ~ December 31, 2016

Mary Phyllis Olsen, "Phyllis" of Vancouver, WA passed away December 31, 2016 at her home in Vancouver, WA after a brief battle with cancer. She was 89 years old.
Phyllis was born June 24, 1927 in White Salmon, WA to Mary and Fred Allen. She grew up in Alderdale, WA with her sisters Myrtle and Jean, and brothers Frank, George, John, and Howard.
Alderdale, WA was a small town located on the north shore of the Columbia river near the Benton county and Klickitat county line, but was vacated and dismantled when the John Day Dam was completed.
Phyllis graduated high school in Prosser, WA. She moved to Portland in 1946 to attend beauty school. She met her husband, Ralph Olsen, through a mutual friend in the spring of 1946.
Ralph and Phyllis were married on November 10, 1946 in Portland, OR, and had two children: Ralph and Fred. Phyllis retired from Nabisco after 25 years of service, and in her retirement enjoyed participating in the lady skippers with the US Power squadron, rolling lefse at the Sons of Norway lodge, and having regular luncheons with the neighborhood ladies and with her daughters-in-law. One of Phyllis's favorite events was the annual "cookie day" where all her grandkids gathered at her house around Christmastime to bake cookies.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of 70 years, Ralph H. Olsen; as well as her son Ralph K. Olsen; her daughters-in-law Alice and Cathy; granddaughters Jennifer and April; and her grandsons Nick, Kyle, and Ben. She is also survived by her sister Jean and brother Howard.
Phyllis was proceeded in death by her son, Fred Olsen, her sister Myrtle, and brothers Frank, John, and George, as well as her parents.
A service will be held at Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 905 NW 94th Street, Vancouver, WA.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the neighbors on Starkrest Avenue, the congregation of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Vancouver chapter of the US Power squadron, and all other members of the community who supported Phyllis and the family during her illness.
