William "Bill" H. Underwood, 101, of Vancouver, WA, passed away on Jan. 24, 2011. He was born in Jackson, IL.
When Bill was 12, he went to work as an elevator operator at a bank and his father's shoe store. He moved to Vancouver in the early 40's and went to work in the Vancouver Shipyards (then known as Kaiser Shipyards) as a welder.
Bill married Margie Hamilton in the early 1940's.
He worked at the Quinault Indian Reservation as a waiter and later retired as a Maitre d' at the London Bar and Grill in the Benson Hotel in Portland, OR.
Bill was a former member of many Masonic Order's and a member of other area clubs, in the Vancouver and Portland areas. He and his wife, Margie, also were very active in the Kiwanis International Division 44. He was past Lt. Governor, past President of the NAACP Pacific Northwest.
Bill is survived by his sons, Bill Jr. (Martha) of San Diego, CA, Norman H. (Arisane) of Knoxville, TN and Guthrie "Buzz" (Dianne) of Vancouver; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and his present wife, Janice and her two children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Bessie Underwood; his brothers, Lavern and Percy; his wife of 53 years, Margie; and grandchildren, Ricky Underwood, Rosemarie VanEtten, and Patricia Sample.
A Celebration of Life for Bill will be held on Sat., March 5, 2011 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 426 E. 4th Plain Blvd., Vancouver, WA from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and he will be interred at St. Luke's next to his wife, Margie.
