Dr. Virginia Ann (Moses) Neal, Ph.D., of Vancouver, WA, born on July 12, 1929 in Eugene, OR, to the late Arthur and Elma Moses, passed away at age 89 on November 23, 2018 in Longview, WA of natural causes.
Virginia graduated from Oregon State University with her Bachelor’s degree in 1951, Wellesley College with her Master’s degree in 1953, and University of Oregon with her Doctorate in 1984.
She was an educator at Lewis and Clark College for 31 years, serving as a Professor of Health and Physical Education as well as Chair of the Athletic Department, Women’s Athletic Director and Varsity Tennis Coach. She retired as Professor Emeritus in 1994.
Virginia was the loving wife of the late Daniel R. ”Bob” Neal. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jane Thornton; and brother, Jack Moses.
Virginia is survived by her sons, Daniel A. Neal (wife Michelle) of Kalama, WA and Douglas B. Neal (wife Sara) of Brush Prairie, WA; grandchildren, Renae Skar, Marty Neal, Dan Neal and Robbie Neal; and 6 great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed camping, hiking, tennis, golf, knitting, and attending grandchildren’s sporting events. She was a board member of Northwest College Women’s Sports Foundation, executive committee member and secretary of National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics, a member of Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges, Oregon Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and Oregon Women’s Sports Leadership Network, and the secretary of American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Virginia lived her life with passion and zeal, pursuing opportunities without bounds, but first and foremost was dedicated and devoted to her family and friends.
Friends and family can pay their respects at the memorial service, officiated by Pastor Jennifer Brownell, on Saturday, December 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Vancouver United Church of Christ, 1220 NE 68th St., Vancouver. Reception to follow.
