Manuel "Manny" Fernandez of Independence, OR, (also known by his loving brother as "Mangolo"), passed away May 2, 2011 at the age of 71. He was born June 10, 1939 in Havana, Cuba.
While in Cuba, Manny was a Merchant Marine.
He moved to Portland, OR in 1968 and became a U.S. citizen in 1973.
Manny was married to Sharon Giffin and together they have five children: Sally, Paula, Smokey "Brian", Bridget and Gary. Manuel and Sharon later divorced.
Manuel worked for Frito Lay for 20 years.
He enjoyed playing soccer, boxing, family BBQ's and spending time with his brother Jose.
Survivors include his children; brother, Jose Fernandez of Independence; sister-in-law, Jacqueline Carlson of Independence; nieces: Maria Rardin of Independence, Teresa Connor of Independence; god-daughter and niece, Encarnacion Ingram of Vancouver and Caridad Devries of Independence; several great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his nephew, Jose Fernandez.
Visitation will be 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Wed., May 4th with services at 6:00 p.m. all at Farnstrom Mortuary, 410 Monmouth St., Independence, OR 97351.
