Obituary

LLOYD A. SMITH
July 30, 1913 ~ March 28, 2011

Lloyd A. Smith of Vancouver, WA, passed away on March 28, 2011. He was born on July 30, 1913 to Mr. and Mrs. Vern Smith. Lloyd graduated from Rocky Ridge Elementary School in 1927 and Belfield High School in 1932.
He received a Standard Certificate from Dickinson State Teachers College in 1940 and Bachelor of Science degree also from Dickinson in 1947.
Lloyd spent 3 1/2 years as an infantryman during World War II and received a Combat Infantryman's Badge, ETO Button, and four Battlestars in the European Theater of Operations. He was Honorably Discharged from the Army on Oct. 31, 1945.
Lloyd taught for five years in country schools north and south of Belfield and two years at upper grades and high school in Fryburg, ND and one year as principal of Roosevelt Grade School in Dickinson.
In 1947, Lloyd moved to Vancouver, WA and taught school in the Vancouver School District from 1947 until he retired in 1973. He was credited with 36 years of teaching experience and two years graduate study at Portland State.
Lloyd was a member of the VEA, Grange, DAV-past commander, Retired Teachers and Senior Citizens.
Lloyd is survived by four sons, Darrell (Sheilah), Dan (Janet), Gene and Greg (Carly); nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma and Ila; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie; and his second wife, Ruth.
There is a viewing on Fri., April 1, 2011 from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Chapel, 1101 NE 112th Ave., Vancouver, WA 98684. The funeral service is Sat., April 2, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, and there will be a gathering of family and friends in the Hospitality room at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel, following the graveside service.
