JOHN MARTIN ULRICH
January 31, 1939 ~ March 19, 2018

John Martin Ulrich passed away from complications due to Alzheimer's at the age of 79. John was born in Portland, OR to Warren and Marjorie Ulrich. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1957 and attended the U of O as a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. John then joined the Navy, serving two years of active duty aboard the USS Energy, a minesweeper, and four years in the reserves. While in the service, John married Pamela Freeman and they adopted a son, David John, in 1966. John and Pamela divorced in 1975.

In 1966, John began working for the family-owned business, Pacific Machinery & Tool Steel Company. Starting in the warehouse, he moved to the sales department, retiring as inside sales manager in 1994.

John met his soulmate Cindy at work. One of their early dates was a sailing trip to Hawaii with other members of Cindy's family. Having survived that, getting married in 1983 was easy.

Throughout their life together John and Cindy enjoyed frequent visits to Cannon Beach, Maui, Cabo San Lucas, and road trips to see friends and family and nature along the way. In 1997, they bought property east of Washougal and built their dream house.

John enjoyed hiking, camping, pool, reading and music. Most of all, though, he loved hanging out with family and friends, which often included a microbrew or a margarita!

John was preceded in death by his son, David John. He is survived by his wife, Cindy; brother, Warren "Bud" Ulrich; and sisters, Susan Rick and Jocelyn "Mimi" Davis; and beloved grandchildren, Jordan and Jessica. He also leaves behind, too numerous to list, but much loved nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws.

Cindy thanks the caregivers and staff at The Hampton Salmon Creek for their compassionate care of John over the past 3 years.

A celebration of John's life will be held Sunday, April 29th, 2018 from 2:00-5:00p.m. at Bridgeport BrewPub in NW Portland.
