October 23, 1918 ~ May 25, 2011

Jerald "Jerry" Thorp, 92, born October 23, 1918, was the third of four sons born to Josephine and Alvia Thorp. He grew up on a farm in the Yakima Valley, graduating from Wapato High School and Washington State College (WSU).
He married his bride of 70 years, Moneta "Neta" Mary Bair in 1940. They moved to Seattle where he worked at Boeing during the war years. They moved back to Yakima where he became district manager for Fuller Brush Company.
Jerry and Neta began a new adventure as owners of Sunrise Bowling Center in Vancouver, WA in 1966. In 1972 Sunrise Bowling Center was destroyed by a tornado, a very rare event for the region. Rebuilt, Sunrise Lanes reopened two years later in 1974. Jerry's love of people was returned to him, as demonstrated by the appreciation of his loyal customers, who returned with their leagues and made the business prosper once again. He was inducted into the Clark County Bowling Hall of Fame in 1983.
Jerry was a lifetime member of Elks and President of Eagles International in Yakima. He was a member of Fish First and loved to fish with his son, Jerry, Jr. He also enjoyed golfing with his buddies, camping and spending time with his family and friends were his favorite post retirement activities.
Jerry and Neta moved to Longview, Washington in 2006. Jerry was an honest man who worked hard. He was easy going and had a constant smile for all. It was said of Jerry that he never met a stranger. He had a very full life in the love of his family.
Jerry passed into the grace of God at home on May 25, 2011 and will be missed by all those fortunate enough to have known him. Jerry was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Kathryn and granddaughter, Wendy Kay.
He is survived by his wife, Neta, at home in Longview, WA; son, Jerry, Jr. and Kristin Thorp; daughter, Pamela and David Eikrem; daughter, Robin and Mike Packard; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jerry's life will take place, at noon, Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Keith & Keith Chapel with private burial taking place at Terrace Heights Cemetery in Yakima, WA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jerry Thorp's name to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 1215 Fourth Ave., Suite 1400, Seattle, WA 98161 or go to Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.
