Helen V. Grady passed away on November 5, 2018 at age 100. She was born in Yakima, Washington on October 22, 1918 to Frank E. and Grace M. Adams, the eldest of two children. She was preceded in death by her brother Donald. Raised in Yakima and Cowiche, Helen graduated from Cowiche High School.
She attended Yakima Valley Jr. College, where she met James Grady, her future husband. Helen next attended Washington State College in Pullman, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health with a minor in Bacteriology. She married James Grady in 1942. While Jim was serving in the Army she worked at a number of jobs and stayed with Jim when he was assigned to army posts that had accommodations for her. While raising her boys, Helen was active in PTA and American Field Service, served as a Cub Scout den mother, and taught Sunday School. The family settled in Vancouver, Washington in 1957.
When the children were grown, she worked for a local orthodontist as the office manager and X-ray technician until she retired.
Helen and Jim enjoyed traveling with their 5th wheel trailer, ballroom dancing, camping at their “Stump Ranch” property, gardening and spending time with family and friends. Helen belonged to the Columbia Christian Church.
Jim, her husband of 73 years, preceded her in death in 2015.
She is survived by sons, J. Edward of Florida and Kenneth (Colleen) of Seattle; her grandchildren, Brett Grady, and Kaitlyn (Evan) Lavender; and great-grandson, Owen Adam Lavender.
A memorial service is planned at Evergreen Memorial Gardens at 12:30p.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2018. Inurnment will be in Yakima at a later date.
