Mr. George Phillip Sackos, age 81, of Vancouver WA, died of natural causes at the Veterans Hospital in Portland, OR while surrounded with love from family in the early evening on Dec. 12, 2018. Born in Thermopolis, WY to his parents, Phillip Sackos and Stravroula (Angelos) Sackos in 1937, George was a loving son and brother to Theodore Sackos. His parents owned ranches in Wyoming and Idaho before finally settling in Stevenson, WA in 1947. George spent the remainder of his childhood there and is recorded in the Stevenson Hall of Fame taking his football team to state after being undefeated. He also played football in college at Washington State University where he majored in Geology.
George was a member of the military in service of our country through the U.S. Army.
He owned many businesses which included restaurants, bars and a cherry orchard in Dallesport, WA.
George loved nature and animals and is well known for his care of those most vulnerable. He was an avid stock trader, stamp and coin collector, and opera lover. He kept journals on political thought and theory. But most of all, he loved his family with a fierce dedication. He will be dearly missed by all of us.
George is survived and dearly loved by his two daughters, Heidi Sackos married to Thomas Chisholm and Teresa Lancaster married to Jesse Lancaster, both of Vancouver, WA. George was a proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Lisa Sackos of Stevenson, WA, Stephanie Sackos of Battle Ground, WA, Joshua Sackos of Los Alamos, NM, Brian Lancaster of Tucson, AZ and Zack Lancaster of Vancouver, WA; four great-grandchildren, Akya Sackos-Connoly, Nyobi Sackos-Nix, Tydus Sackos-Nix and Luna Sutton; two step-great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emma Lexa, who attribute many of their successes to him; three nephews, John and Caren Sackos of Albuquerque, NM, Michael and Bopie Sackos of Fayetteville, NC and Gregory and Milissa Sackos of Paradise Valley, AZ. He also maintained close contact with his cousin, Nick State of St. Joseph, MI.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Theodore Sackos of Worldand, WY.
A funeral service for George will take place Sat., Dec. 29th at 10:00 a.m. at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel in Vancouver, WA. A Trisagion and Wake service will be held afterwards in Stevenson, WA where he will be laid to rest next to his parents at the Stevenson Cemetery.
