FRANCES ELIZABETH “JANE” ARTHURS
October 29, 1948 ˜ September 4, 2022
Frances Elizabeth Jane Arthurs passed away on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2022, in Vancouver, WA. She was 83 years old.
Jane was born in 1938 to David and Georgina Martin in The Bronx, NY. She graduated from Walton High School, Bronx, NY, and attended classes at Columbia University. She was very independent, living with 4 gals in a 2-bedroom apartment in New York, classing up the joint with her sense of style. She became best friends with one of her roommates that spanned a 60+ year friendship whom her adult children still call “Aunt” to this day. While visiting her sister in Portland, OR, she caught the eye of her future husband, Maurice “Maury” Arthurs. When asked what made him want to marry her, he said she was a “foxy” lady. They married on Sept. 8, 1962. She passed away just four days shy of their 60th wedding anniversary.
They went on to have two children, a daughter and son, raising them to be strong, independent, and purposeful adults. She and Maury travelled with friends over the years, played Pinochle, Bunco, dressed up for Halloween and loved family/friends intensely.
She even managed to get a Morris Miner into a single car garage sideways, making dad scratch his head wondering how in the world she managed that!!! She had talent!!!
Jane always made herself available to her children’s friends making it a point that if they ever wanted to run away from home, they were to come to her first to talk things out.
She was an amazing writer including poetry. She even had a piece published.
She had an incredible sense of humor, loved her family and friends fiercely, and was loved by those who met her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, David and Georgina Martin; and her sister, Susanne Lothrop.
She is survived by her husband, Maurice “Maury” Arthurs; her daughter, Janel (Arthurs) Hoyt; son, Neil Arthurs; daughter-in-law, LeeAnn Arthurs; and stepson, Jeff Arthurs.
A private service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Kaiser Permanente Hospice of Portland, OR (500 NE Multnomah St - 7th Flr - Portland, OR 97232).
