September 10, 1928 ~ October 20, 2017

Eleanor Vidinha Smart of Washougal, WA, passed away on Oct. 20, 2017. She was 89 years old. Ellie was born on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Kauai, in Eleele, Kauai.
She graduated from the University of Hawaii and joined the Marine Corps at the tender age of 23.
Ellie spent much of her career in San Diego, first in the Judicial System as an Officer, then Judge, and later as a business owner with her husband, Don.
In their forties, they decided to sell everything and travel around the world, twice! Then eventually, they settled down in Clark County in 1982, living in Battle Ground and then in the Pinebrook neighborhood in Vancouver, WA, gathering a great number of faithful friends wherever they went.
Ellie was a free spirit. She was feisty, an adventurer, loved garage sales, treasure hunting, playing golf, cards, scrabble, arguing and laughing. She played her Martin guitar in a local Hawaiian band and composed and sang Hawaiian songs and contemporary favorites.
Ellie was loved and loved fiercely back, by her close-knit family and friends and in her last year, by the care staff from Good Shepherd Manor AFH.
Ellie died as she lived, with a wry attitude
and a great wonder of it all. To say she is missed
is an understatement. Ellie, you are sorely missed.
She is survived by her brother, Robert of Bordentown, NJ; sisters-in-law, Ida, Nobuko and Dorothy Vidinha, Jackie Vidinha; nieces and nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by husband, Donald Smart; parents, Jacinth and Mary Vidinha; brothers, Edward, Lawrence, Ronald and Steven Vidinha; and sister, Margaret Remoaldo.
A memorial mass will be said at 11:00 a.m. on Fri., Nov. 10, 2017 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 324 NE Oak St., Camas, WA 98607. Interment will be in the Spring 2018 at Willamette National Cemetery.
