CONARD AUGUST MAUL
February 5, 1927 ~ January 11, 2018
~ Life without Limits ~
An amazing man that even after a tragic and debilitating injury, continued to live life on his own terms. Dad knew what he was about, defied all odds, and did it his way, even as he passed away on January 11, 2018, less than one month shy of his 91st birthday. He died at home, in Ridgefield, WA surrounded by his family.
He provided his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends with a rich exposure to the world of construction, building, wood shop, horses, hunting, boats, games, and puzzles. And then there was the Connie Maul way. He hated drinking water and realized that the real key to a long and independent life was Coca Cola and coffee, straightforward good food with as few vegetables as possible, cookies, and cinnamon rolls from his dear neighbor Cindy.
Our father has been blessed by the care that was unreservedly given by his wife Helen and, following her passing two years ago, by his wonderful caregivers and his family. There are truly gifts and blessings in life, and the kind and gifted women (Laurie, Arlene, Donna, Alyssa, Michelle, and Julie) that patiently cared for Dad and helped him retain his independence and dignity cannot be overstated.
Dad was born in Snow, ND on February 5, 1927 and moved to Ridgefield, WA with his parents, Joe and Adele; sisters, Alys, Ruthie, Lois, and Lyn; and his older brother, Carroll; when he was nine. He was part of a wonderful extended family with many uncles, aunts, and cousins.
After serving in the United States Marine Corps, he married Helen Ann O'Leary in June 1950, after first meeting her while smelt dipping on the Lewis River. The strong sense and appreciation of family was central to his and Helen's 68 years of marriage, with the last two and a half years as a widower.
Prior to suffering a catastrophic brain injury while on the job in 1979, he was a construction superintendent with Packard Construction and specialized in complex underground utility projects, industrial construction, and construction of municipal sewage treatment plants. Dad was known as "Joe" by the men at work (after his father) and was highly respected for his great intelligence and the way he treated the people he worked with. He was very proud of the fact that his jobs were always profitable for the company and at the same time, provided stable employment over many years for his crew.
Dad excelled at all sports and math, and was probably the strongest person anyone in our family had ever seen or has known. He never gave up.
To know him was to respect him
and he will be missed by his family
and everyone whose lives he touched.
Dad is survived by two sons: Jim (wife Kelly) and John (wife Shannon) Maul of Ridgefield; seven grandchildren: Heather Maul (husband Kurt Peterson), John Maul (wife Mandy); Gregory Maul (wife Christina), Stephanie Maul (partner Elijah) of Portland, Oregon, Daniel Maul of Bellingham, WA, Lily and Angelina Maul of Ridgefield; and three great-grandchildren: Hannah Maul (boyfriend Kim) of Santa Cruz, CA, Haley Callahan (husband Casey) of San Diego, CA and Claire Maul of Ridgefield. He and Mother's forth great-grandchild is on the way, as Christina and Greg are expecting. Dad was very proud of his family.
Dad was preceded in death by his parents; siblings; and wife, Helen. Brothers, Carroll and Connie, passed within 6 days of one another. This was a bit of a surprise to the entire family.
Memorial contributions can be sent to Hospice Southwest.

It has been a real privilege to have Connie as a longtime friend. We can recall Connie's involvement in many areas in this community. He was a big supporter of our schools and loved to be part of the sports. His involvement along with Helen has made this place a great community we can all be proud to call our home. What an inspiration you were to us living with your disabilities and "never giving up". Friends, Merle & Barbara Pfeifer
