CAROLYN SUE (LAIN) BERKEY
September 28th, 1938 ~ February 28th, 2018
~ A life well lived ~
Carolyn Sue Berkey, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on 2/28/2018 in Vancouver, WA at the age of 79.
The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 9th, 2018 at 3:00 PM at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 805 SE Ellsworth Rd., Vancouver, WA 98664. There will be a celebration and dinner after at Patricks Hawaiian Café. All are welcome.
Carolyn was born on September 28th, 1938 in Stillwater, Oklahoma to Taylor and Beatrice Lain. She graduated from Ponca City High School and went on to earn her Bachelors Degree at Oklahoma State University.
Carolyn was married on December 28, 1962 to Howard L. Berkey. They were married for 22 years and had 2 children, Howard and Stanton.
Carolyn enjoyed a successful career in office management, and was a highly regarded employee at several business throughout her working life. She was also an active and greatly loved member of the congregation at the Church of the Good Shepherd.
Carolyn received a Lung Transplant in December 2000, and afterwards lived a remarkable life. She is one of the longest surviving recipients of a lung transplant on record. She enjoyed an excellent quality of life for 17 years, living independently until shortly before her death. The survival rates for living this long after a lung transplant are around 5%, much less with the quality of life she enjoyed. This miracle allowed her to meet and become an integral part of her grandchildren's lives, for which we are eternally grateful. She approached her health as she approached everything in life, with a smile and a positive attitude.
Carolyn is survived by Howard and Hiroko Berkey; Stanton and Dalya Berkey (sons/daughters-in-law); Simon and Gabriel Berkey (grandsons); Joyce and Hugh Brown (sister and brother-and-law); and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by Taylor and Beatrice Lain (parents) and Kemper Lain (brother).
She will be dearly missed, but she lived a wonderful life, knew the Lord, and died peacefully surrounded by family. It was truly a life well lived.

I have never stopped thinking about Carolyn since we lost touch back in 2006 or so. I'm so happy to learn she was able to have so many years with her beloved family. Rest in peace.
