Vernon Dahms Obituary

VERNON "MICK" DAHMS
February 23, 1942 ~ November 17, 2017

Vernon A." Mick" Dahms was born February 23, 1942 in Caldwell, Idaho to Vernon Henry and Helen Dahms. Mick passed away on November 17, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He received his nickname after he was born from one of the nurses in the hospital. He didn't know his name was Vernon until he was six years old and started school. Mick moved with his family and grew up in Boise, Idaho. Mick served in the Navy as an aviation structural mechanic from 1961-1965. He served in San Diego, CA and the Philippines.
In early 1968, Mick met Lena Erquiaga and they married on September 28, 1968. They were married for 49 years and they had two daughters, Jennifer Wolfe and Andrea Foskett. Mick was a proud graduate of Boise State University. He earned a BA in Art Education. After graduation Mick worked most of his career as a carpenter in commercial construction. He was a journeyman carpenter and a welder. He also worked for HP.
Mick was a man of many interests and talents. In his twenties, Mick raced motorcycles in Idaho at the Owyhee Motorcycle track. He also would repair motorcycles for others. Mick enjoyed the arts such as painting and pottery. Mick later became interested in making and flying kites. He started his kitemaking journey when he made a kite for his daughters. Mick flew the first kite he made and was hooked while his daughters headed to the playground to play on the swings. In 1987 Mick co-founded the KGB (Kite Group of Boise) with is kitemaking friends. Mick enjoyed going to kite making workshops at Fort Worden, WA and Long Beach, WA. Until his later years with dementia, Mick loved to travel to Kite Festivals around the Northwest.
In 1996 Mick and his wife Lena and his daughter, Andrea moved to Vancouver, WA when he worked for HP. When HP downsized Mick returned to working as a carpenter and worked for Tri- Way Construction. He continued to enjoy his kitemaking hobby in Vancouver and making new friends and neighbors. Mick always made time for his family and friends. He was a dedicated husband and father. Even with Alzheimer's disease, Mick enjoyed his young grandchildren. His face would perk up when he would see his grandchildren when they visited him.
Mick was also a man of Faith. He was baptized in the Catholic Church on Easter 1986 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boise, ID. Mick was currently member of St. John the Evangelist church in Vancouver.
Mick Dahms is survived by his wife, Lena; daughters Jennifer (Chris) Wolfe, Andrea (Tim) Foskett; three grandchildren, Thomas Wolfe, Timothy Foskett, and Maria Foskett; his brother, Kenneth Dahms; and his sister Susan Glave. Mick is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Helen Dahms.
Mick's family would like to thank the caregivers of Brookdale Stonebridge Memory Care for providing good care of their loved one.
Mick's family suggests in lieu of flowers donations can be made to OHSU Foundation for the Neuroscience Department or St. Vincent DePaul Society or a favorite charity.
A funeral mass will be held on December 1, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 8701 NE 119th Street, Vancouver, WA at 11:00 a.m.
