VERNETA MAE ENFIELD
May 8, 1919 ~ January 13, 2011
"She will be remembered for her hard work, loyalty,
encouraging attitudes and decency and for her fairness,
quick wit and lively sense of humor."
Verneta Mae Enfield formerly of Vancouver, WA, died in her sleep January 13, released from all worries and cares. She was born 91 years earlier in the Nebraska wheat country, where she grew up and married.
As a young mother in the 1940s, she taught in a two-room school house in rural Nebraska before relocating to Los Angeles after World War II. She retained a lifelong interest in teaching and education, pursuing and obtaining her own college degree while encouraging her children to do the same.
Meanwhile, she worked with troubled youth as a probation officer, and later taught as an adult educator with the Los Angeles County Board of Education, gaining the love and respect of those she mentored.
She retired with her husband to Vancouver, WA, where she became a master food preserver, sharing her skills with all who were interested. In 2006, after a life of hard work and service and in failing health, she relocated with her husband to Columbus, GA, to be near their oldest son and his wife.
Verneta is survived by her sister, Lela Brandt; son Roger and his wife, Susan in Columbus, GA; her son Ronald and his wife, Diane in Cherry Hill, NJ; three grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Leon Earl Enfield; brothers, Cleo and Orla Glenn; and sister, Lois Alden.
