Janice Louise Schurman

Janice Schurman, of Portland, Oregon, passed away on October 4th due to Alzheimer’s at the age of 73. She was born April 9, 1945 to parents Clyde and Mildred Schurman of Woodland, Washington. Janice grew up in Woodland where she graduated high school. She later attended the University of Colorado graduating with a BA in psychology.
In 1968 she became a case worker with the Washington Department of Social and Health Services helping children in foster care. She remained there for several years before deciding to attend law school. She graduated in1988, becoming a member of both the Oregon and Washington Bar. Working as an Assistant Attorney General for Washington State, she continued to handle cases concerning child neglect, foster care, as well as litigating adult family home issues. In 1997, until retirement, she returned to work for the Washington Department of Social and Health Services where she handled all statewide litigation concerning adult family homes. Janice’s lifetime concern for the welfare of children and elder citizens made her a very special person to so many.
Janice loved to travel, with many trips to Mexico and Europe. She was particularly partial to the wine regions of France. She loved her wine! She also enjoyed spending time at the Portland Zoo where she worked as a volunteer for over 25 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Janice is survived by her sister, Linda (Arnold) Wyttenberg; brother, Gerald Schurman; brother, Roger (Beckie) Schurman; and son, David Harvey, all of whom will miss her very much. Linda, Gerald and Roger would also like to give a very special thank you to Arnie and Beckie for all the help and support you have given so selflessly to Clyde and Millie’s kids, again.
A graveside service will be held at 10a.m., Saturday, October 13th at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 NE 112th Ave., Vancouver, WA, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name can be made to the Washington State Alzheimer’s Association.
