James Liedtke Obituary

JAMES DALE LIEDTKE
May 20, 1937 - October 11, 2018

James Dale Liedtke, 81, died Thursday, October 11th, 2018 from complications of heart disease in Monmouth, Oregon. He was born May 20, 1937 in a farm house in Waco, Nebraska to Kenneth and Helen Liedtke. In 1942, the family moved to Vancouver, WA and settled in the Fruit Valley area. James attended the Vancouver schools and was active in basketball, softball and flag football. During the summers James, Ralph, Gary and Rich picked strawberries, black and red raspberries, cucumbers, beans, etc. to earn money for their clothing.
James later attended Clark Jr. College for two years and the University of Portland for two years majoring in Chemistry. Employment those years included working at Union Carbide in the Saint Johns area of Portland, OR.
During the Spring of 1959, James met Lloye Sawyer at a church gathering and they subsequently married in June of 1961. They celebrated “57” years of marriage this past June.
In the Fall of 1959, James attended Washington State University to begin work on a PhD program in chemistry. After four years he received that degree majoring in Organic Chemistry specializing in Organoboron chemistry. There, he was published in scientific journals concerning this work. His career took him to Whittier College, Whittier, CA, Oregon College of Education, Monmouth, OR, and Portland Community College in Portland. James also developed an interest in nuclear science and worked at Oregon State University for several summers where he was involved in the Neutron Activation Analysis program.
His outside interests included gardening, teaching ballroom dancing and playing the soprano saxophone. Annual trips to Maui were in the fall where he walked on the beach, swam in the ocean and met many wonderful friends. He traveled with Lloye on Eola Winery OSU football games away, which included visiting Civil War sites, the baseball Hall of Fame and Fenway Park, etc. Branson, MO trips were in the Spring with family and friends.
Lloye misses his “warm” smile and twinkling eyes and loving heart.
James and Lloye had two daughters, Corinne Lloye (Robert) and Maria (Mia) Helen (deceased in 2010); grandchildren, Brianna Lloye (Jake), Carly Fransisca (Matt) and Brenden John; and great-grandchildren, Chloe Nicole, Ellie Lloye and Liam Kenneth.
James pays special respect to Dr. Kirk Walker for saving his life during a major heart attack in 2005.

I looked forward to our annual visits at Crooked River Ranch for many years. We shared a mutual interest in softball, music, Oregon State sports and swimming with the other seniors each summer at the CRR pool which was usually followed by a lunch with Jim and Lloye at the Big Dog Saloon. Christa and I will miss him and look forward to getting back together when the Lord calls us home.
