DR. EDWARD “ED” MCANINCH
November 9, 1925 ˜ December 27, 2018
Longtime pillar of the Camas-Washougal, WA community, Dr. Edward “Ed” McAninch, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2018, joining his late wife of 66 years, Edwyna “Eddie” McAninch. Ed was born in Pittsburgh, PA, to Malcolm G. and Sarah E. (Drum) McAninch. He was raised in Mount Lebanon, PA.
Ed and Eddie met singing in the church choir while in high school. Ed attended Carnegie Tech briefly, but was called to service with the Army in WWII, where he served in the infantry in France. He was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. Following a prolonged recovery, he set his sights on a career in medicine. He enrolled at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where it happened that Eddie was also enrolled; their relationship blossomed there. They married in 1950. Following graduation from Denison, Ed attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, graduating as an MD in 1952.
In search of adventure and a change from the East Coast, they moved to Seattle, WA, where Ed completed his internship. Following internship, they settled in Camas, WA, in 1953, where Ed practiced medicine actively until 1991. He was appointed a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice in their first cohort in 1969, helping shape family practice medicine as it is today.
Perhaps what most people know about Ed was that he was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, who could frequently be found hiking with the Osprey’s. He spent a substantial amount of time with Boy Scout Troop 312, and remained deeply involved with the Mazamas climbing club. Ed and Eddie traveled the world extensively, with Ed’s adventures taking him to all 7 continents over the course of his lifetime. He was a staunch defender of the environment, and was known to participate actively in political demonstrations. For many years he was actively involved with St. John’s Presbyterian Church.
Ed was grateful and humbled to be honored as Camas Washougal Citizen of the Year in 2010.
He is survived by three children: Malcolm, MD (Janeen) of Portland, OR, Wendy, M.Div of Ashland, OR, and Gregg, MD (Carrie) of Reno, NV; he has 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edwyna “Eddie”; and a daughter, Julie, who died in infancy.
In keeping with his love of the outdoors in general, and the Pacific Northwest in particular, a celebration of life will be held at a time and outdoor location to be determined in the Spring of 2019.

So many memories of both Ed and Eddie. It all began with Apollo the Dalmatian. For years I looked forward to anecdotes about individual McAninch family experiences in the great outdoors both in the US and abroad plus Ed's wondrous jokes. We recently talked together about his experience working with the Makah Indians which conversation was precipitated by my finally traveling up that way. Ed was a committed environmentalist and he loved hitting the trail for early morning hikes at Round Lake(Lacamas Lake) with his beloved Osprey friends. Til we meet again.

Mal,Wendy,Gregg,
Your dad was a kind, compassionate and committed physician who, along with your mom, went well beyond their professional obligations during my father's illness and death many years ago. Ed donated many hours and much effort to the Camas community and shames me with his selfless giving. He contributed as scout master, gave me rides to Mt. Hood and donated the money for my med school microscope fee, and with you mom became good friends --- a privilege and pleasure that I enjoyed over the past many years. I have nothing but respect and fond memories of Ed as well as of your mother.

I will remember Ed as a friend who made an effort to make a good connection whenever we met. He shared the practice of medicine with my dad, and Eddie was a hiking companion extraordinaire to my mom. I will miss them both. May he be at peace. Deepest sympathy to Mal, Wendy, and Gregg and your families..

Dr Mac was our family doctor for many years. He was a compassionate, comprehensive, and caring Doctor/man.
There were. Seven of us children in the Dusenberry family. He saw each of us more times than any of us could guess. He was the good Dr in Camas.
In Christ, Linda Dusenberry, Brown

Dr. McAninch was indeed a pillar of our Camas/Washougal Community. He has been around since I was a kid growing up in Washougal, and everybody knew him! Such a warm person who truly loved people.

I regularly encountered Ed (and Eddie before her death) around Vancouver at events in support of trails, the outdoors and conservation. The photo so captures Ed as I remember him from Volcano Views and Brews. I will miss his smile and cheerful greetings.
