Douglas Schaller Obituary

DOUGLAS CHARLES SCHALLER, D.C.
November 2, 1940 ~ June 20, 2018

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Douglas Charles Schaller, was gathered into the arms of Jesus on June 20, 2018 at the age of 77 after a brief battle with an aggressive form of cancer. Doug was born in Rapid City, SD on Nov. 2, 1940 to John and Alice (née Thoresen) Schaller, the oldest of four children. He graduated from Bellevue (NE) High School in 1958.
After serving in the U.S. Navy as a medic, he attended Clark College, where he met and married his wife, Bobbie. They moved to St. Louis so Doug could pursue his lifelong ambition of becoming a chiropractor. He graduated from Logan Chiropractic College and then returned to the Pacific Northwest, opening his first office in Coeur d'Alene, ID. He subsequently moved to Vancouver, where he worked with his cousin Marlo Saboe at Mill Plain Chiropractic. Upon Marlo's death, he took over the practice and cared for his patients with integrity, compassion, and kindness for over four decades before he retired in 2015. He was always available to them day or night.
Doug's faith in God and love for his family were at the center of his life. He was a dedicated and devoted husband to Bobbie, his wife of nearly 54 years. He delighted in the lives of his children and grandchildren, coaching them in soccer and baseball and enthusiastically attending every one of their matches and events that he could. An avid runner, Doug completed several marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 1996. He also enjoyed golf, skiing, photography, trips to Hawaii, and good food and friends. He loved the holidays and cherished get-togethers with his family and friends. He and Bobbie also opened their hearts and home to an exchange student from Barcelona for a year. Doug was passionate about the unborn's "right to life" and served on the boards of the Crisis Pregnancy Center and Gideon's International for many years.
Doug is survived by his wife, Bobbie, his son Jeff and wife Natalie, his son Mark and wife Erica, his daughter Micah Hill and husband Jason, and 12 grandchildren: Kennady, Carson, Taylor, Emily, Olivia, McKenzie, Grady, Ty, Brody, Kylie, Cade, and Chloe. He is also survived by his sister Peg and husband Dennis, his brother David and wife Surang, and five nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack, and sister-in-law Joan.
A funeral service will be held for Doug on Saturday, July 7 at 1:00 p.m. at Glenwood Community Church, where he and his wife worshiped. The service will be followed by his interment at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

Dear Bobbie, Jeff, Mark and Micah and family~
Dan and I were saddened to learn of Doug's fight with cancer and his passing. He will be missed, I know, but his life with the Lord will be pain free and worry free. What a blessing to trust in the knowledge of something better.
We will be thinking about you on July 7th, wishing we lived closer and could attend his services. Please know we will be holding you close in thought and prayers.
I will miss Doug's smile and his chiropractor services, lol. That was always such a treat!
May he rest in peace and may the Holy Spirit comfort all of you as you grieve.
With lots of love,
Dan and Terri

To Bobbie and Family. I was so sorry to hear about Doug's passing. He was a wonderful man and a terrific boss. We worked together for 14 years and I enjoyed every single day. We had hundreds of conversations about our faith, families, politics, and everything in between. In our down time, we'd have deep Bible philosophy discussions and he taught me a lot about God's word. How blessed I was to be able to have such wonderful dialog in the workplace, particularly in this day and age. Doug adored his patients and truly cared for them. He was so generous. His patient's never knew how often he undercharged for his services, or wrote off balances for those in financial trouble. It touched me because I knew at times, he truly could not afford to do it. He's reaping the benefits of that kindness now in heaven. He was a ray of light in this dark culture. I can't help but smile thinking that he is now with his Lord in heaven basking in his love. His eternity is just beginning, and those who loved him and the Lord will be reunited with him when we start our eternal journey. Bobbie, he loved you more than anything. In 14 years, I never heard him speak an unkind word about you. He adored his family. It was a rare day when I didn't get at least one story about his children or grandchildren. I know the grief is terrible. My thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless you all during this difficult time.

My heart is heavy reading of Doug's passing. I have so many good memories being neighbors in a little apartment across from Hudson's Bay High School to Doug and Bobbie back in the 60's. I was always impressed by Doug's dedication to become a Chiropractor and Bobbie's support to help him achieve that goal. As you move thru life your paths change and unfortunately I only saw Doug at the store on occasion. It was always good to have a few minutes to catch up. I am so sorry Bobbie, Jeff, Mark, Micah and your families ....Doug was such a good man and I know you will all miss him very much. My heartfelt thoughts are with you.
