Lance Wilson Obituary

LANCE ALLEN WILSON
June 30, 1962 ~ December 1, 2017

Lance Allen Wilson passed away, in his sleep on December 1, 2017. Lance was born June 30, 1961 in Twin Falls, ID, where he and the family lived and began school before moving with his family to Bozeman, MT in 1968. In 1973 the family moved to the Portland area, where he graduated from Reynolds High School in 1981. He then attended Mt Hood Community College and Oregon State University. He worked at the Grand Canyon after finishing school where every chance he got, he was outside exploring. Lance joined the Navy in 1985 where he served from 1985-91 as a sonar technician onboard a ship that chased down drug smugglers in the Caribbean. His work on the ship took him to ports in Denmark, and Norway and the Arctic. While in Norway he backpacked around Norway with a local guide.
After leaving the Navy in 1991 he moved back to Portland where he held various jobs before becoming the safety officer for the Timber Lake Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center. He found a home there and really loved the work he did.
He loved nature and was in it as much as possible, hiking and taking pictures. His outdoor adventures took him across the country to see many of its natural wonders. Places like the Grand Canyon where he hiked rim to rim with his father in 2003, Glacier National Park, Chaco Canyon, Yellowstone, Monument Valley, Tall Grass Prairie KS, Sante Fe, NM. Locally he spent many hours hiking the Gorge and the Wildlife preserves taking pictures of everything he saw. He's very favorite place to hike and photograph was Mount St. Helens. All along the way Lance loved to meet and talk to people. He always had a kind word for everyone.
He is survived by his father Gareth of Vancouver, WA and his sister Heather of Portland, OR. His brother Sean Wilson preceded him in 2002, and his mother DeAnn Wilson in June of 2017.
A Memorial Service will be held for Lance at St Aidan's Episcopal Church 17405 NE Glisan St, Portland, OR 97230 Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 1pm. The family wishes to thank all of those who loved and cared for him throughout his life.

Though we never met face-to-face, Lance was a pleasure to work with over the years. He genuinely cared about the work he did for Job Corps. We will miss him.

Gareth Wilson, Lance's father, and I, share volunteer duties at Multnomah Falls visitor's center. Gareth can be proud to have passed on his love of the outdoors to his son, who drew life from the wonders of nature. May God bless and keep Lance, and sustain Gareth in this time of sadness for him.
