Alex Anderson Obituary

Alex Appel Anderson was born on August 19, 1987, at St. Mary Medical Center to Dave and Renata Appel Anderson. He attended The Kids’ Place preschool, Edison Elementary through third grade, Prospect Point Elementary, Garrison Middle School, and Walla Walla High School.

He then attended Walla Walla Community College, where he completed a Para-educator certificate. Growing up, he enjoyed playing soccer and Little League baseball. He loved being a part of Boy Scout Troop 305, where he achieved the Eagle Scout rank and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.

Alex started having seizures around age 10, which increasingly affected his life and abilities. He was ultimately diagnosed with Unverricht-Lundborg Disease, which is a progressive myoclonus epilepsy.

He discovered a unique art style at Wa-Hi which continued at WWCC and beyond. He authored and self-published a book in 2021, a long-time goal of which he was very proud.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. With the help of family and friends, he was able to enjoy many fun times.

He loved his family and the time we spent together, including holidays and vacations. He cherished his Catholic faith and was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

His huge heart, smile, and absolutely positive attitude will be missed. Epilepsy and its limitations did not limit his dreams but constantly frustrated and baffled him.

A rosary service will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at St. Patrick Church, 415 W Alder St, followed by a mass of resurrection at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 8, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scout Troop 305, PO Box 2665, Walla Walla WA 99362. the Walla Walla Valley Disability Network, PO Box 1918, Walla Walla WA 99362, or a charity of choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.herringgroseclose.com.

Alex was an inspiration and a model for what it looks like to overcome life's challenge in pursuit of joy, connection and competition. His perseverance and passion for sport despite the many challenges his epilepsy created made me want to be better at my work and in my own athletic endeavors.

I was honored to know Alex and watch as he moved from his teen years to adulthood. He learned early that a productive life requires goal setting, determination, and negotiations. His welcoming smile and positive attitude led the way with his every endeavor. Lifting his loving family is prayer during this time of mourning.

I met Alex through the sports program sponsored by the Walla Walla Disability Network. We enjoyed softball and bowling together. Alex was a kind and gentle person, and he made me feel special. I know how much he enjoyed the Network and being able to play sports. I will miss him and his great smile!

Alex was such a sweet young man. I saw him at the grocery store recently and he remembered me as the lady who tried to help him with contact lenses. He never gave up. My prayers are with his family, who never let him give up.

I am sadden with Alex's passing. Alex's was joy to be with in scouts. I remember his cheerfulness and scout spirit on campouts and backpack trips. Besides being an Eagle Scout, Alex was an Eager Scout embracing scouting. My heartfelt thoughts are with his Mom and Dad and family.

Alex was a wonderful person. He shared so much of his heart with others through his work, his art, and his stories. I didn't live closeby but I really enjoyed the times we got to talk about baseball and his other passions. I'm so sad that he's gone from his loved ones far too soon, but I'd like to imagine him playing in Heaven's baseball league. My condolences to his family.

Alex was such a sweet and gentle soul. Enjoyed seeing him as a pre-schooler full of fun and energy and as a very talented, thoughtful and determined young man who loved his family and the times they shared together above all else.
