JOHN LANDEN HENRY MARQUARDT
August 9, 1919 ˜ December 6, 2020
John L.H. Marquardt, 101, of Vancouver, WA, went to be with his Lord and wife Dec. 6, 2020, at VanMall Retirement. John was the only child of Henry and Fanny Marquardt. He was born Aug. 9, 1919, in Portland, OR.
John graduated from Jefferson High School in Portland in 1940. After graduating, he began his career with SP&S Railroad as a brakeman. John’s entry into World War II was delayed as he was the sole support and only son of his mother. Upon his mother’s death, John enlisted in the US Navy, rank EM3. He served for two years. After his discharge, John returned to his railroad career, retiring as a conductor with BNSF Railroad in 1985 ... 45 years.
He met Nellie Mountain on a double date (she was the ”other girl”). They married June 9, 1950, and were married for 63 years.
After John retired, he built their second home at Rockaway Beach, OR. He enjoyed spending time there, sharing and making memories with family and friends. John also enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling to California and Canada. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Hazel Dell, WA, for 48 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and daughter, Jeannie Marquardt.
John is survived by his daughter, Becky (Jerry) Harris; two grandchildren, Jeffrey (Jessie) Harris and Jacquelyn (Ed Pender) Harris; three great-grandchildren, Maddox and Charlotte Pender, and Brooke Harris; and nephew, Jeffrey Mountain.
Internment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Upon dad’s request, his 100th birthday party will act as his celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice
