October 17, 1913 ~ January 30, 2013

Ernest Helms, 99, of Vancouver, WA passed away January 30, 2013. "Ernie" was the youngest of four sons born to his parents Ida and Walter in Reading, PA. He grew up in Reading and married his wife Catherine ("Nan") in 1934.
His love of flying led him to join the Civil Air Patrol in the early 1940's. Upon his discharge from the C.A.P. in 1944, Nan & Ernie moved to Portland, OR where he became co-owner and President of Western Skyways, located at the Troutdale Airport.
Nan and Ernie welcomed their only child, Jerry, in 1945. After retiring from Skyways in 1980, Ernie went on to co-found another company with his business partner and friend, Vern Hickman.
For over 50 years he was a member of various organizations and clubs including the Shriners and Quiet Birdmen. He spent many years at Columbia Edgewater Country Club as an avid golfer.
After 63 years of wonderful marriage, Nan preceded him in death. He married Benarda "Beni" Rice in 1999. They remained devoted to each other until her passing in September 2012.
Ernie led a good life full of love, hard work, fun, challenges and many successes. He was well respected by his peers, loved by his friends and cherished by his family.
He is preceded in death by his sweetheart Nan; his loving second wife Beni; and his cherished son Jerry. Left to remember his wonderful spirit are his daughter-in-law, Juel; his grandchildren Sheri Borrevik and husband Jeff, Chris Helms and wife Miklyn, Jennifer Lacey and husband Eli; and his great-grandchildren Lena, Claire, Gavin, Gabriel and Dakota.
