HAZEL JOANNE (CARNER) NEWMAN
September 6, 1930 ~ April 6, 2014

Hazel Newman was born September 6, 1930 to Carl Leroy Carner and Frances Helen (Jones) Carner in Battle Ground, Washington. She passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at the age of 83 years.
Hazel graduated from Battle Ground High School with the class of 1948 and until recently continued to meet with her classmates annually.
On October 18, 1948 she married her lifetime companion, Clifford C. Newman and they lived in the Hazel Dell area of Vancouver where together they raised their four children Alan (Mary) Newman of Ridgefield, WA; Kathy (Dan) Kirk of Vancouver, WA; Scott (Elizabeth) Newman of Enumclaw, WA; and Sue Lindsey of Vancouver, WA.
For many years Cliff and Hazel also had a place in Ocean Park, Washington where she enjoyed many wonderful times with friends and family while fishing, clam digging, golfing and just being at the beach.
Hazel worked in retail for 20 years at Payless Drugs, Hall's Pharmacy and Mike's Eastside Pharmacy all in Vancouver. She was also a past member of the congregation of Messiah Lutheran Church and for many years worked on the Election Board for Clark County.
She enjoyed traveling very much and great memories were made during a 50th Anniversary trip to Alaska with Cliff in 1998 and one to Darmstadt, Germany with her daughters in 2004. There were also numerous trips to Hawaii and the deserts of Arizona and California with family and friends over the years. And, more recent adventures to New York, Vermont and Las Vegas to celebrate births, graduations and weddings.
Hazel was blessed with nine grandchildren: Beth, Lori, Cori, Erin, Shannon, Cady, Jessie, Anna and Clifford and ten great-grandchildren Jordan, Madeline, Taylor, Sophia, Ella, Charlie, Grace, Skylar, Holly and Emery.
Hazel discovered golf in her 50's and for many years to follow she played weekly at Lewis River Golf Club in Woodland as well as being a regular fixture in the Annual Carner Family Tournament.
She was a wonderful mother and homemaker. Her yard was beautiful and her garden was always successful. All of her children have memories of hot August days snapping beans and waiting for the last canner to come off before getting to go swimming at Lewisville Park.
Hazel was a true "people person" and it was often said you couldn't take her anywhere in a hurry because she would always run into someone she knew and would have to stop and talk.
Hazel is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Clifford and all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Richard (Beryl) Carner of Terrebonne, OR; James (Sandra) Carner of Battle Ground, WA; Claire (Karen) Carner of Vancouver, WA and sisters Edna May (Roger) Rustrum; Carolyn (Edward) Haisch both of Vancouver, WA. As well as numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her caring and giving spirit.
The family would like to acknowledge the loving care and many kindnesses shown to Hazel by the Staff of the Cottages at Highgate Senior Living in Hazel Dell and the wonderful service of Peace Health Hospice Southwest.
Donations, if preferred, can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association in memory of Hazel or to any charity of the giver's choice.
Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Vancouver, WA.
