THOMAS "THOS" ARTE JOHNSON
August 2, 1945 ~ May 2, 2012
Thomas Arte Johnson, 66 years old of Vancouver, Washington, passed away on May 2nd at 9:24 a.m. as a result of complications from an aortic aneurysm. The family is planning a private memorial. He was born in La Grande, Oregon on August 2nd, 1945 to William E. and Helen D. Johnson. He graduated from WAHI high school in Walla Walla, Washington, and then received a Bachelor of Sciences in Civil Engineering from Washington State University, and his Masters in concrete and lemintous materials from Purdue University as well as his Professional Engineer accreditation.
Thomas was married to Elizabeth Ann Sisson for 45 wonderful years in Auburn, Washington on September 10th, 1966.
He was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for his entire career and was a leading authority in structural concrete for the American Concrete Institute. He was an influential force in building the Bonneville, Dworshak, and Snettisham Dams that harnessed the power of the great rivers of the Northwest.
Thomas filled his free time mastering numerous hobbies. He was an avid quilter, cross stitcher, Elks member, bridge master, woodworker, painter, hunter, fisherman, cook, golfer, fly tier, and gardener. His wife and himself loved anything Disney and took numerous visits to Disney World throughout their lives together and was a place that always gave them much happiness.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Betty; brother, Bob of Pendleton; nephews, Mark, Randy, and Scott of the Seattle area, as well as Brian and Kevin of the Portland area; his great-nieces, Parker and Taylor Johnson; and great- nephew, Owen Johnson. He will be greatly missed.
