ROBERT E. FASTABEND

Oregon National Guard, Ret.
December 25, 1933 ~ December 24, 2017

Robert Edward Fastabend, 83 of Vancouver, WA, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017. He was born a Christmas twin on December 25, 1933 in Astoria, OR, to John and Elizabeth (Shea) Fastabend. He grew up in a large family with 6 brothers and a sister. Robert "Bob" graduated from Star of the Sea High School in 1951.
He married Margaret "Peggy" Smith in October of 1952 in Astoria, OR. Bob and Peggy had 5 children which they raised in the old Naval Hospital grounds in the Walluski area.
Robert worked as a foreman for Lovell Auto Company in Astoria from 1951 to 1968. In 1968, Robert began a full-time career for the Oregon Army National Guard that started as a shop foreman at Camp Rilea. He transferred to Camp Withycombe in May of 1971 and resided in Milwaukie, OR. In 1984, he transferred to the Oregon Military Department in Salem, OR. Robert retired in 1988 as a Chief of Staff for the Oregon Army National Guard.
He was a very supportive and fun loving father and grandfather. He was generous to his grandkids and enjoyed spending time with them all. You would often find him sitting on the floor playing right alongside his grandkids and great grandkids, who lovingly called him GG Bob.
Robert is survived by his wife, Peggy Fastabend; daughters, Karen Black, Jackie Dieker and Paula Starr; sons, Ken Fastabend and Randall Fastabend; sister, Cathy VanHorn; brother, Jack Fastabend; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services and Military Honors will be held at a later time.
