MICHIKO (YAMASHITA) HOLBROOK
January 9, 1934 ~ January 21, 2018

Michiko Holbrook 84, of Ridgefield, WA, passed away in her home peacefully among family. She was born in Tokyo, Japan, one of seven children, to father Tatsunosuke Yamashita and mother Jitsuko Yamashita.
Her family succeeded in rebuilding life after World War II. Michiko met and married her husband, Eugene Worthy "Gene" Holbrook, in Japan where he was stationed during the Korean War. Michiko came to the United States with her husband in 1958, just beginning to speak English. She was the only one of her family to leave Japan.
She discovered a love of caring for others as a Nurse's Aid in the 1960's. She spent many rewarding years with revered co-workers at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, OR and the former St. Joseph's Hospital, in Vancouver, WA on unit 2-South. She continued to find joy in her work for nearly 30 years. Her career ended in Home Healthcare. She always looked back with pride and fondness on her memories of that time.
Michiko was an avid gardener spending countless hours in the dirt among the flowers, shrubs and vegetables. She loved her home and being surrounded by what she nurtured and grew. It brought her incredible joy to watch her garden unfold year after year. It was her sanctuary. On any given day she could be found immersed in her labor of love.
Michiko was blessed with many dear friends of all ages whom she truly treasured. She loved weekly trips to the Vancouver Farmer's Market, and long afternoon luncheons enjoying Japanese food in the great company of beloved friends.
She is survived by her two children and two grandsons; son, John Holbrook and his son, Zachary; daughter, Jennifer Couvillion, her husband, Thomas and her son, Liam.
Michiko was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Holbrook; daughter-in-law, Wendy Holbrook; sister, Kumiko; and brother, Teiji.
Memorial service to be held 1:00 PM on February 10, 2018, at South Ridge Community of Christ Church, 400 NE 179th St., Ridgefield, WA 98642.
