MARGARET MARY KAUFMAN LEMCKE
March 19, 1918 ~ April 15, 2014

Margaret Mary Kaufman Lemcke, 96, of Vancouver, WA, passed away April 15, 2014. She was born in Twin Falls, ID on St. Joseph's Day, March 19, 1918 to Charles and Beulah Kaufman. She was the middle child of five. The family moved to their S.E. Portland, OR home in 1924, where she experienced a very happy childhood. She graduated from Franklin High School in Portland in 1936 and went on to Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR.
Margaret married Al Lemcke on May 19, 1940 and began married life in Forest Grove. They lived on the east coast while Al was away serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, they returned to the Pacific Northwest and were married for 53 years.
Margaret was a teacher at the Washington State School for the Deaf from 1961-1973. Her colleagues there became long time friends.
Retirement took Margaret and Al to Lincoln City, OR in 1976, returning to Vancouver in 1984. She continued to be active at Vancouver Heights United Methodist Church and enjoyed classes and travel with Clark College Mature Learning, volunteering in the Vancouver Public Schools, and her monthly investment group.
Margaret is survived by her four children: Charlotte Cordner, Susan Demme (Jock), Charlie Lemcke (Sharon), and Jay O Lemcke (Patty); seven granddaughters: Mary Margaret Babak, Jane Demme, Anne Demme, Katharine Lemcke, Emily Lemcke, Lynn Ann Coleman (Alex), and Jennifer Lemcke; two great-grandchildren: Izabella Babak and Jack Babak; and by Marjorie Larson, Toni Fisher, Kathy Taylor and Peter Cheng, who for various periods of time, lived with Al and Margaret and their children.

Special thanks to Mavis Albertsen, Debbie Locke, and her caregivers, at Lockehaven Adult Family Home.

Not sure what to say?

A most special Lady. Bundle of energy and made you feel like you were important. My mom, Rosemary Hilke Edlund and Margaret "team taught" well before the term became an everyday description. The deaf kids in their classes were the winners. Margaret supplied the artistry, music, energy, and love which melded so perfectly with mom's lifelong dedication to deaf education. A lot of the light left mom's professional life upon Margaret's retirement! They remained good friends for well over 45 years. She was a subtle mentor to me and my sister Celeste as well. So grateful to Susan and Charlotte for the effort to bring Margaret to Salem in 2011 to say goodbye. Will always remember her dramatic personality and her ability to laugh at herself. Together, they were legend! Love to all of your family!

I met Margaret while working at Courtyard Village. She was such a marvelous lady; charming, witty and intelligent. A delight to talk with and know.

While I was working on the WSD Alumni Newsletter to put your mom on the obituaries section and I came across with the WSD yearbook 1974 looking for a good picture of her. I knew it would mean a whole bunch if I could copy the "Dedication" about what WSD had stated about your mom, our special, wondeful teacher: "About fourteen years ago, a census-taker from Olympia arrived on our campus and, before she knew it, Superintendent Virgil W. Epperson had talked her into becoming a teacher of the deaf. We are sure that Dr. Epperson did not have to use an awful lot of pressure because this woman's heart was in the right place. And it still is. As a teacher in our Primary Department, this woman always left an indelible impression on the little ones in her classes. She was sincerely devoted to them and had a unique way of communicating that all-important emotion called LOVE--especially with her twinkling dark eyes. The members of the Class of 1974 affectionately dedicates this yearbook to her."

Margaret was a GREAT teacher and she was one of my favorite childhood teachers. I loved her sense of humor. I really enjoyed our visit a few years ago. She was well-liked by her deaf students as well with the staff she worked with. She will be greatly missed!
