LaVon Holden Obituary

LAVON C. HOLDEN
March 23, 1945 ˜ February 24,
2021

LaVon C. Holden, daughter of the late Lawrence Sylvester and Lillie Esther Holden, was born March 23, 1945, in Winner, SD, and died peacefully Feb. 24, 2021, in her home in Hillsboro, OR.
LaVon graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1963 and from Pacific Lutheran University in 1967 with a degree in speech and German; she completed her master’s degree in industrial relations at the University of Oregon in 1985. LaVon retired from the Vancouver Housing Authority as the Deputy Director after 26 years of dedicated work. She was honored by the National Association of Housing Redevelopment Officials with the Friends of Affordable Housing Award in 2010 for her tireless legislative efforts to advocate for better rural and farmworker housing. LaVon had a lifelong commitment to serving her community: she was president of the Vancouver YWCA, a founding member of the Council for the Homeless and church council president of St. James Lutheran Church of Portland.
Her life full of service, faith and familial love will be held warmly in the memories of her surviving siblings, LeAnn (Howard) Schwab, Lila (George) Young, Larry Holden and Lyle Holden; and her nine devoted nieces and nephews. Due to COVID restrictions, a private service will be held at St. James Lutheran Church of Portland April 10, 2021. Remembrance contributions can be made to the Vancouver YWCA, St. James Lutheran Church or the Council for the Homeless of Vancouver.
