JOYCE DARLENE COX
August 26, 1934 ~ July 31, 2012
Joyce Darlene Cox died peacefully with her family at her side on July 31, 2012 at her home in Washougal, WA at the age of 77. She was born August 26, 1934 in Campbell, Minnesota to Marvin and Laura (Witt) Fett. Joyce graduated with honors from Campbell High School before receiving her B.A. degree from Sioux Falls College in South Dakota.
A 50-year Washougal resident, Joyce worked as a teacher at Jemtegaard Middle School for 31 years and was a NEA member. As a female athlete growing up in the pre-Title IX day, Joyce was a strong advocate for female access to athletics by coaching girls volleyball at Jemtegaard Middle School and girls basketball and track at Washougal High School.
Outside of school and sports, Joyce enjoyed cooking, hunting and fishing and was a long time NRA member. Most importantly, Joyce enjoyed being around her family and close friends.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, James David Cox; children, David (Debbie) of Stevenson, Douglas (Christie) of Washougal and Jodi (Fred) Hatfield of Portland; siblings, James Fett (Therese Sprunger) of Lacey, Washington and Lloyd (Anne) Fett of Mason, Michigan; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
In an effort to support Joyce's undying love for athletics and education the Joyce D. Cox memorial scholarship fund has been established. If so inclined, you can make donations to the fund at Riverview Community Bank in her honor. This fund will provide access to athletics and education for many years and will honor a few of the many amazing things Joyce will be remembered for.
The community is invited to join the family in a celebration of Joyce's life to be held Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Joe Brown Memorial Gym at Washougal High School.
