JOHN HESTER CARR
September 24, 1924 ~ January 18, 2017
John Hester Carr was born in Yakima, Washington to Robert Carr and Harriett Brown Carr on September 24, 1924. He married Peggy Lou Horner on October 4, 1947 in Yakima. They became Salvation Army officers in 1962 and served in Northern and Southern California, Hawaii, and Washington state. John also served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He later served in the Army followed by an additional 22 years in the Coast Guard. John and Peggy attended the Salvation Army Portland Tabernacle Corps.
John was an avid sportsman and enjoyed softball, basketball, and golf in his later years. After retiring in 1989, John and Peggy enjoyed camping, travel, and spending time with their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. He was a regular volunteer with the Southwest Washington Wind Symphony. He wore his WWII Veteran baseball cap and a cheery smile while selling CDs in the lobby after concerts.
John is survived by his sons: Richard (Colleen), Ronald (Janet), and Roy (Kathleen); daughter Robin; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his brother Les. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, and a daughter, Carol.
Contributions may be made in his honor to the Southwest Washington Wind Symphony (12800 SE Angus Street; Vancouver WA 98683).
A Celebration of Life and Promotion to Glory will be held at the Salvation Army Vancouver Corps, 1500 NE 112th Avenue on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
