James Brotherton Obituary

JAMES "JIM" CARL BROTHERTON
May 6, 1931 ~ May 10, 2011

After recently celebrating his 80th birthday last week, James "Jim" Carl Brotherton passed away May 10, 2011 in Vancouver, WA. He was born in Hood River, OR on May 6, 1931. He lived in Battle Ground, WA for the last 38 years.
He served in the United Stated Navy during the Korean War.
Jim was a computer pioneer and involved in many aspects of the computer industry, retiring at Wagner Mining Co.
He had an avid interest in the world around him. As a younger man, Jim's interests led him anywhere from race car driving towards his main interest of growing and hybridizing both rhododendrons and orchids. He had a particular fascination with genetics which led him to raise and breed many various birds, fish, and other types of plants. Other interests included a love for music and a great voice, rock/gem collecting, and spending time with his family. Always an intellectual, he never stopped reading informational text, constantly researching today's medicine/medical research, latest technology, and genetic breakthroughs.
He was a self motivated life long learner.
His family misses him dearly.
Jim is survived by his loving and caring wife of 45 years, Jean; sister, Bette; sons, James Jr. (wife Sylvia), Rick, Scott, Kirk, Michael; and daughter, Karen (husband Troy) Morningstar; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sister, Jeanne, 2007; brother, Robert.
A memorial service will take place on May 19th, 1:00 p.m. at Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden in Portland, OR in the Meadow. Interment will be at Crawford Cemetery in Battle Ground, WA.

I worked with Jim at Wagner Mining Equip from 1987-1994. I recall his many interests and always noted that although he was my father's age, he was had the youngest attitude and outlook that I knew. He shared his knowledge and interests freely and was always interested in what was happening around him. He was the proof that being young was an attitude and not an age. My condolences to his family, and my prayers are for you all.

We remember all the good times at Battle Ground High School basketball games when our daughter, Stacia, Karen and Mike played. Jim was always laughing and making others laugh. He and Pat had early computers interest in common. Our hearts are with you during this time, Jean and family. He will be remember with the twinkle in his eye--WHAT A GUY!
