IONA GRACE (TAYLOR) FLAGAN
July 11, 1924 ~ February 12, 2017
Iona Grace Flagan passed away in Vancouver, WA on Feb. 12, 2017, after dealing with dementia for several years. She was born on July 11, 1924 in Forest, ID to Bud and Grace Taylor. Iona graduated from Grangeville High School in 1939 at the age of 15. Upon graduation, she moved to Spokane, WA where she graduated from Northwest Business College. While in Spokane, Iona met her future husband, Grant Flagan. She and Grant married in Grangeville, ID on June 9, 1946. On June 9, 2016 they celebrated a milestone - their 70th anniversary. During the child rearing years, she had a variety of jobs, working as a bookkeeper, cashier, and bank teller.
Iona's volunteer activities were extensive. She was a Campfire Girls leader, a peer counselor to older adults, worked with hospice, brailled math books for the blind for 30 years, served as a Long-Term Care Ombudsman for 10 years for the State of Washington in Vancouver and Camas, and was active in the local Volkswalk Club and International Marching League. Iona and Grant trekked in all 50 states, all Canadian provinces, and several foreign countries. Together, they walked more than 13,360 kilometers.
After living at several locations along the Northern Pacific /BNSF route, Grant and Iona retired to their home at Fairway Village for 27 years. In late November 2014 Iona moved to The Hampton at Salmon Creek, a memory care facility. Our appreciation goes out to the entire staff at The Hampton for the exemplary care she received there.
Iona is survived by her husband, Grant, of Vancouver; daughter, Vicki (Rod) Schmall of West Linn; son, Roger of Battle Ground; and by several cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sat., May 27, 2017 at the clubhouse at Fairway Village from 1 to 3 p.m. Iona's cremains will be place in a columbarium at Willamette National Cemetery.
