Henry Curtis Obituary

HENRY GOODMAN CURTIS
April 26, 1926 ~ July 19, 2013

Henry G. Curtis died July 19, 2013 at the Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver, WA surrounded by his loving children and his loving dog, Fabio. He was born April 26, 1926 in Idaho Falls, ID.
He spent his childhood in Southern Idaho, graduating from Boise High School in 1944. He enlisted in the Navy in the fall of 1943 and participated in officer training and engineering programs at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1946. He was on active duty through 1947.
He studied English at the University of Idaho where he met his future wife, Lynette Davis. They were married after graduation in 1948.
After college, they lived in Missoula, MT, and various Northwest cities to which his work as a news reporter took them. As a Naval Reservist, he went to China during the Korean War. His three children were born in Twin Falls, ID, Bremerton WA and Seattle WA. The family lived in Boise, ID from 1956 to 1968. He worked as the news director of KBOI TV/radio, and later had a public relations business of his own. He obtained a pilot license and was able to combine his career and his love of flying.
In 1968 he became manager of the Northwest Public Power Association in Vancouver. He and Lynn got their first sailboat and learned to sail on the Columbia River. They skied on weekends at Timberline. They moved to San Juan Island in 1977 after his semi-retirement. There they were active in community affairs, especially the San Juan Community Theater, of which he wrote a history. They enjoyed cruising British Columbia's Sunshine Coast and throughout Puget Sound. They travelled widely, visiting China in 1980, the Soviet Union, Egypt, Costa Rica, Mexico, and several other parts of the world.
Hank and Lynn returned to Vancouver in 2003, where they lived in Fairway Village. He was active in the Democratic Forum and wrote columns for the Villager, and they continued to travel, often with the Fairway Village Travel Club. Lynn passed away in October, 2011. His sweet dog Fabio kept him company after her death.
Survivors include his daughter Donnelyn (Charles Drewes) of Reno, NV; son Geoffrey (Kimm) of White Salmon, WA; daughter Nancy of Olympia, WA; grand- children Ellen Drewes in San Francisco, Bowen Drewes (Kathy) of Reno, and Will Drewes in San Francisco.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Fairway Village clubhouse on August 24, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clark County Historical Museum.

Not sure what to say?

So surprised and sorry to hear Hank had died. Thanks to his family for sending us an invitation to the memorial celebration. Hank and Lyn were old business and personal friends going back to NWPPA days - we sure had great times in those days. Sorry we can't come down for the memorial.

Goody, as we knew him then, was my desk-seat partner in the first grade at the 4-room, 8-grade Cole School with our teacher, Miss Monteith. With two grades to a room, he was in the second grade, while I was in the first. As a result of that arrangement, by the time we finished the 8th grade, we had something of an accelerated, or at least repeated, education. Then I followed him on into Boise High. We reconnected when he returned to Boise and then lost touch again when he left. He was always admired and respected by everyone who knew him.

Hank ("Goody") and Lyn were close friends with Betty and I dduring their Boise years, our thoughts are with the family during this time. He was not only a friend, but a great public servant, playing a large part in the establishment of the state's public employees retirement system and the state merit system for publid employees. He and Lyn were wonderful people and will be remembered fondly by us and all who knew and loved them.

It came as a complete shock when we read the Columbian Obituaries on Wed. I was planning on calling Hank everyday to arrange our Happy Hour that had become our tradition. But I only thought about it, because summer had become very busy. If only we had known Hank was in hospice, we would have visited him to say good-bye. Donnie, Jeff, and Nancy, Hank and Lynn were the catalyst for my moving to the NW. They both will remain a very important part of my life. Gary and I will miss him. Unfortunately, we will be in Denver during the time of his memorial, as we were in Denver for Lynn's. My heart will be there. With deep sympathy, Dell Ann Dyar and Gary Miller
