Gary Arthur Hillestad, 54, of Vancouver, Washington, died peacefully on April 6, 2007, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family and close friends. Gary was born July 28, 1952 to Kenneth and Jean Hillestad in Yakima, Washington and was raised and attended school in Vancouver. He worked as a plumber in the early 70's and was a vested member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 598 of Pasco, Washington. He had an enjoyable career with his last employer, Washington Group International, where he made close friendships with many. Gary enjoyed boxing. He won the Golden Gloves twice and coached young boys in the art of boxing at the Pasco Boxing Club. He loved to travel with his devoted wife, who with the help of his two sons took care of him throughout his illness. The three of them were an extreme comfort to him. Survivors include his wife, Sharon, sons, Dennis and Danny, and parents, Kenneth and Jean Hillestad, all of Vancouver, WA. Other family members include a brother, Kenny of Seattle, WA; a sister, Brenda Cobanoglu of Cleveland, Ohio; nine grandchildren; one niece and two nephews. Gary, You will be missed by many! A Memorial Service will be held at Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home, 302 W 11th Street, Vancouver, WA, on Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at 3:00pm. A gathering of friends will take place at the family home following the services. Arrangements are under the direction of Cascadia Cremation and Burial Services, Inc.
