EDITH HARTLEY
January 24, 1924 ~ May 10, 2017
Former Alaskan, successful entrepreneur, loving and beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Edith Helen Schroeder Hartley, 93, passed away peacefully, May 10, 2017 in Salem, OR. Born to Louis F. and Katie W. Schroeder on Jan. 24, 1924, she was the youngest of 8 children to grow up on the family farm in Paola, KS.
After completing business college in Kansas, to aid in the war effort, Edith took a government job in San Francisco. She became pen pals with Hugh Hartley and, when he returned from his Pacific tour, they were married in 1943. Following Hugh's military, and then air career, they saw lots of the country, and had 6 children along the way, before settling in New Iberia, LA in 1957. In New Iberia, Edith worked at the Blue Bird Florist Shop and Texada's Jewelry Store, meeting lifelong friends along the way. She was an active member of the High School Band Booster Club and the New Iberia Little Theatre. She performed in a number of the plays put on by the Little Theatre.
In 1968, Edith and her 2 youngest siblings, Van and Katie, moved to King Salmon, AK and then Anchorage, AK following the path of Hugh's aviation career.
In the early 70's, Hugh and Edith founded, with good friends, Marge and Glen Scales and Phyllis and Yank Sumpter, Eagle Enterprises, a successful Marine and Aviation survival and oil field service company. Edith and Marge forged a strong personal and business relationship over the years at Eagle Enterprises, finally selling the business and moving on into retirement.
In 1991, after selling Eagle Enterprises, Edith retired to the Pacific Northwest landing in Vancouver, WA where she lived, gardened, traveled, and enjoyed her adventurous life. Her strong will and character enabled her to live in the home she loved until she could no longer and had a brief stay in Keizer, OR until her passing.
Edith was a talented artist, gifted gardener and floral arranger, loved quilting and crocheting and was always creating lovely art around her home. She put her business acumen to use as a member of a Women's Investment Club. Edith was an adventurist and traveled widely around the world to places such as Peru, Australia, Puerto Rico, Italy, France, Singapore, Japan, Guam and other places she had always wanted to visit and experience. She loved to play scrabble with family and friends.
Edith is survived by her loving children, Valis Hartley of Hazlehurst, MS, Stephanie (Thomas) Inguagiato of New Orleans, LA, Richard Hartley of Anchorage, AK, Constance Ettinger of Keizer, OR, Van (Donna) Hartley of Anchorage, AK and Katie Sue Young of Eugene, OR; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Hugh B. Hartley, who passed away in May 2015; her parents, her four sisters and three brothers.
Friends, family and neighbors are invited to join in the memorial service and reception following at 6:00 p.m., Nov. 20th at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 12513 SE Mill Plain Blvd., Vancouver, WA. Then family and friends will head to Seaside, OR to fulfill her wish to have her ashes spread along the Oregon coast. A celebration of her life will be held in Seaside on Thanksgiving Day with a potluck Thanksgiving Day dinner.

I have heard so much about Katie's mom over the many years of my and Katie's friendship that she became familiar to me, and if I remember correctly, I met her once in Katie's home in Columbia, Mo when her mom was visiting. Katie, you look so much like your mother in this picture of her. What a wonderful legacy she left to all of you for a life well lived and what a nice sharing of her adventurous life the family has described for her here. My prayers and condolences are with the family and with my friend Katie and her children. God bless!

I got to know Edith in our investment club. She had a brilliant mind & great sense of humor. I still remember her advice on oil stocks.
We also connected through aviation.
I am so sorry for your loss.
