Duane Leon Ochs, 62, died in St. Ignatius, MT on Aug. 13, 2013. He was born in Vancouver, WA on Jan. 7, 1951. His parents, Leon and Esther Ochs ran a dairy farm and the family was active in 4-H. He attended Camas High School, Linfield College, and Washington State University.
Duane married Marleen Thurlow, his wife of 39 years, in 1974. He graduated with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1976. He then served as a research veterinarian in the U.S. Army before returning to graduate school in 1979, earning a Doctoral degree in Pharmacology and Cell Physiology.
Duane was a researcher and teacher at the Virginia Tech Veterinary School and later opened a veterinary practice in Murfeesboro, TN. His twin boys, Leon and Chris were born in 1995. As the veterinary practice grew, Duane hired other vets and was free to travel in a motor home throughout the USA and Canada with his family, homeschooling the boys. After several years of travel, they settled in St. Ignatius, MT.
In addition to his wife and children, Duane is survived by his mother, Esther Ochs and sisters, Valorie Ochs and Janis McLaren, all of Camas, WA. He has a large group of family and friends in Washington and Oregon.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Fern Prairie Methodist Church, Sat., Aug. 31, 11:00 a.m.
